The ones I can remember clearly were,

- large section of the tail end of the game and inc. the ending to 'Deadly Premonition' (360/PS3)

- Nier (PS3/360) ,many parts in the game

- the ending to 'Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII' (PSP)

- salute moment of MGS3: Snake Eater

- my particular ending (clem and kenny) to 'the walking dead season 2'

Recent memory....hmmm.....Not too sure. Probably Okami, but not in the way you're thinking. That game just makes me unbelievably happy no matter how many times I play it.

Saints Row 3 & 4 got me laughing! I had a few tears towards the end of Gears 3. Also, season one of The Walking Dead had some touching moments.

Red Dead Redemption ending. Damn you Rockstar!

Final Fantasy VII both the main game and Crisis Core were emotional.

Beyond Two Souls was tear jerking at times.

Halo 4. #RampancyCharityAppeal

The Prologue to The Last of Us. Though interestingly I felt very little for the rest of the game.

Glad to see a mention for NIER, I feel its story is fantastic for a videogame, and the voice acting is also great for a JRPG. I manages to tell a tragic story of a father trying to save his sick daughter, while adding in some humorous critique on the JRPG genre and its cliches. A self aware and intelligent story it is.

@Yoshi9000: I felt sorry for that kid Emile, who was turned into the experiment. actually 'Loved' that character. Kaine was also a tragic transgender character, didnt feel much for the protagonist though but his general story was emotional. I love the fact upon second playthrough, it makes you think about what you did in the first playthrough by giving you a different perspective. It like the versus XIII trailer when it quotes shakespeare - 'nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so' and I thought i was the bad guy when I saw what I was really doing.

Final Fantasy X

Mass Effect 3

Shadow of the Colossus

Remember Me

Wow now thinking of it there is so many. Pandoras Tower, Walking Dead, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4.

I haven't played this Nier game but ot sounds like it would be good

@GamerNerdTalk: you should play it, but go into it with reasonable expectations. it's not a perfect game by any stretch, made on a very low budget. The narrative will keep you playing, if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded.

One thing I hate about that game is growing those special white flowers for that achievement, am I right? lol

The last of us was probably the one game which made me sit and think about what happened and talk about it at long lengths.

But the one which got me the most was probably metal gear solid 4 just because it of its emotional speech and throw back to the original, which brought back great memories

@moinsyyed: I think all the characters were equally great in their own right. I feel the father was purposefully a boring character to contrast the other characters who were more dynamic and colorful. In the end, all he cared about was saving his daughter, so he was a static character in that sense. He never developed, while Emile and Kaine by the end, accepted their flaws and had development.

And that second playthrough was mindblowing. I dont think I've ever played a game before that took advantage of its medium to show you a different side of the story. Instead of being just another play through, it becomes almost another game (story wise).

@Yoshi9000: Yeah I mean I played again for the various different endings but I was surprised when we got to see the extra scenes. I particularly liked the bit where you find out about the motivation of the wolves but still had to kill them. That was heartbreaking. It's a shame drakengard 3 never came anywhere close to how compelling Nier was. Nier needs a remake, if it had a bigger budget, better sidequests, less exposition through text, it would be a masterpiece

I do want to give a shoutout to crisis core though, by the end of that game I understood the throughline, about what it means to become a hero. Sometimes heroism is rewarded with death. I do believe tabata has mentioned on numerous occasions that his experience with crisis core informed the tale of final fantasy: type-0

The last time that happened to me was with Clannad, quite a few years ago. That's probably the only one that ever made me shed tears.

Before that, the closest was probably the ending of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

Walking Dead Season 2. Not even 10 minutes into the first episode and I was crying like a girl at a romantic comedy.

Yes to all three of these even though the first two were not exactly recent. Also The Last of Us (both the main campaign and the prequel DLC). The Telltale GoT game has it's moments even this early but I would classify those events as shocking more than tear jerking.

For me it was Child of Light most recently. Mass Effect 3 also got me and Gears of War 3 made me set down my controller and want to go to a corner and cry.

The only fairly recent games I remember making me sort of sad were Gears 3, Mass Effect 3 and the Walking Dead.

  • The Ending of Mass Effect 3. Don't know whether I was thinking about it for days because of how terrible it was, or because it was time to say good bye to these amazing characters. May be both. In fact all Mass Effect games end very emotionally.
  • The Walking Dead Season 1 ending was way more emotional for me but I also felt sadness a lot at the end of Season 2
  • Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne's ending blew me away. It really hits hard. I was like,,, WOW.
  • The Witcher 2's ending. That red bug scene was very deep if you know what it means. If don't, then google it. In some Asian countries (where I live), there are a lot of European myths/legends that are famous here too and that bug scene was one of them.
  • Grand Theft Auto 4 had two endings and both of them made me sad panda. I chose the other option the next time and was happy that this time things will be different and it was even more emotional than the revenge ending. Lol. I was like "WTF?"

Final Fantasy X- When Tidus was fading away as he was holding Yuna and he walked right through her.

Final Fantasy X-2- When Yuna and Lenne were singing a thousand words...I balled like a baby

Resident Evil 6-When Helena had to let go of Deborah's hand because she turned into a Monster

@chillock117: I found silent hill 2 more haunting and lingering that tragic. Tragic scenes you get over after a night, but that ending stuck with me for a while.
