@ariabed: "IMO first person games are the most immersive cos it's like your seeing the game world through your own eyes almost like VR, the camera is your virtual head."
I feel the opposite. There is no other sensory feedback beyond visuals, and the inability to see any of my character just makes me feel like I'm not even playing one.
"I mean when your walking along round the shops or whatever how often do you look down at your legs, not much I bet, you look straight ahead and all around your environment."
Difference being that I have a variety of other senses working that make the experience feel real.

@Pffrbt: You're letting something like lack of legs in avideo game "break immersion" for you? Really? You do know what a video game is right? an unrealistic entertainment form?
This isn't about realism. This is about immersion. I can't get invested in playing a character I can't see. It's part of why first person shooters are criminally uninteresting except for the rare cases where one manages to have fun gameplay, like L4D2 or Portal.

you are still moving the same collision detection box around the map wether the character is rendered to you or not. in multiplayers, you are being rendered to other players.
Cool, I don't care. I can't see my character so I don't feel like I'm playing one.
"also, did you know that in third person games you also play in a floating space? the area behind the camera is not being rendered when it's not visible."
Doesn't matter, I can see my in game avatar, so I feel like I have an actual connection to the game world.
