First of all competitive video gaming is not a sport. The definition of sport is an activity that required physical exertion of the body and competitive athletic talent, not some 500 lbs plumper on the couch holding a controller. Real athletes stay fit by exercising not clicking a mouse button with their finger.

Also I do not understand all these nerds who will go to a movie theater or auditorium to watch other play video games. Why wouldn't you rather be playing video games yourself instead of watching someone else play them. What fun is that. Hang on I'm going to my buddies house, I'm not going to play any games, I'm just going to watch him play a game, WOW what a swell idea!!!

In a world where Poker, Chess and Racing are sports, gaming might as well. Also there is a physical component ranging from reaction time over eye-hand-coordination to just being really fast with your fingers:

@tryit: I'm just making a statement

Are you a 500 lbs nerd with cheeto fingers sitting on the couch and calling yourself a serious e-sport athlete while chugging down a 2 litre bottle of soda in your Green Lantern pyjamas that mom just brought down to you in the basement, at 40 years old LOL

am I personally? for the sake of the conversation lets say yes because its not relevant what I am or am not and I dont want people to get distracted

the question is, why does it matter if a person is a 500 lbs nerd who calls himself an athlete because he plays video games.

If he called himself an athlete full stop without saying he was a e-sporter then I would get the point, but otherwise I dont get the poimt

@tryit: Because there is no such thing as a 500 lbs athlete, unless you are a sumo wrestler. Even linebackers in football only weight tops 350-380 lbs, so if you are a saggy plump couch potato with a cheesy controller in your hand, you are not an athlete and I would say, put the fork down, lay down the controller and get out of moms basement and get a job you slob. pfffff Athlete, good one

Gaming isn't a physical sport but it can be considered a "competitive" sport.

the POINT of a label is to get to the understanding.

if you already know what is required physically of being an e-sporter then what they call it is not relevant.

so.

1. if you dont know what his sport is calling someone an athlete can be misleading to the main point.

2. if you DO know what his sport is calling him anything is just a label not relevant to understanding the main point

see? a label is a tools to point to understanding, if you already understand then the label doesnt have a point.

@fanboymctroll: I never considered E-Sports a sport, it's just a name for advertisement and rolls off the tongue easily.

Many would also tell you it's for marketing, just like EVO. They could come up with any name for these competitive gaming events; however, they pick something easy to communicate and advertise. Not difficult to understand.

As for the-

Why wouldn't you rather be playing video games yourself instead of watching someone else play them

I also don't actively seek people who play games, because my time is limited for gaming itself, so I'd rather play a game. However sometimes, like an EVO moment I'll posting below. The vibes in the room alone can be so positive it shows how passionate Gamers can be. And for me personally, that's something worth watching, more/ or just as much as the competitive Players.

Loading Video...

Yet it goes without saying everyone will like something for different reasons. So if someone is more into watching games on Twitch? Ok, doesn't exactly stop me enjoy playing games.

So real question is why do you care, and why should anyone care for your immature stance?

If anything, this whole thread just shows you have a sizeism mental issue. Which has nothing to do with gaming, thus should likely be locked or moved to Off-Topic for that reason alone.

Curling requires less athletism than e-sports. so do several other so called sports that are played on olympic level. Javelin, for example. Throw a stick. Whee, what an athletic performance!

Or NFL. Most players in NFL only run about 20 metres during a game. Most of the time is spent on the bench, watching commercials and pretending to listen to the coach. so they get less excercise than e-sportists. Fact.

As to watcing e-sports, its lot more interesting than watching, say Javeling, or Discus, or Synchronised Swimming. Or thousand other agonizingly boring sports.

When you open Eurosports channel on telly, you usuall see snooker of darts there. And its so boring its not even true!

i mean some fat middle aged blokes throw darts to a wall for two hours, or stand around snooker table rubbing their sticks.

And they call that sports entertainment!

Give me e-sports tournament any day.

There are many sports which aren't very physical. If esport is not a sport, then Snooker, Dart, Curling, Shooting etc are not sports either. And People watch other people play for the same reason that the majority of people watch 22 guys chase a ball. Because these athletes are the best of the world and are going to the limit of what is humanly possible. Also there is much more going on in games than in most sports, so esport is actually objectively more fun to watch...

Alright but you have got to remember the Darts is considered a sport and it is played by overweight men in their 50s and thousands of people are entertained by it. Sport is just a fancy word for competition really

You have obviously not watched olympics. If you had, you would've seen some really unhealthy, fat and just plain unathletic people attending the events.

Same goes for NFL. The linemen are all fat and in really bad shape. If you forced them to run around the field they would die of a stroke.

Just look at this typical pro player in this here photo. Does that look like healthy individual to you?

@mystichusband: You are right I do agree with you, I don't consider Darts, or snooker sports, these are leisure activities, anytime you can drink and play, that is not a sport. Just like bowling, that is just a trailer trash drinking activity. Put on some used bowling shoes with foot fungus on and sit there get drunk and throw a ball down a lane, wow what an activity.

In that regard I would choose watching e-sports over darts, bowling or snooker. lol

LOL at trying to use the NFL as a comparison. I don't know who that player is, but he looks fat even for a lineman. NFL players have some of the craziest combinations of size, strength, quickness, power, and athleticism in the world. You would be better off using so many other sports in this discussion.

Did your school let you out early or did you get suspended?

But you try way to hard and considering game discussion is a forum with low user activity , it´s kinda sad to see it go to waste so you should jump over to System Wars. It will pay off for you in the long run.

It is so a sport if played competitively. In a competition there is an additional aspect of pressure and high stakes which adds to the mental skills required to succeed at the highest level.

However, I would call it competitive gaming rather than sport.

It would be more popular if commentators were better at explaining the games to newcomers. IGN or gamespot did an article on it.

While the definition of Sports is "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

One could argue that several branches of sports has different amount of physical exertion, for instance it takes a larger toll on ones body to play Soccer, Ice Hockey etc. then Archery.

One could also argue that some sports that are apart of the Olympics are closer to pastime activities like Video games, but they are deemed sports for their competitive nature. Such as Table Tennis, Sailing & Golf. I see no reason why one can't add the competitive nature of video games onto that list.

What I do in FPS games and other games like racing games is for sure a sport. It's hard and it take training.

For watching other playing video games, you should try it yourself to find out that it is possible to watch instead of playing. Especially if you find a hot girls that play.

All nonsense aside, I have to agree with op.

I think the issue is "e-sports" just doesn't work. The nomenclature for that doesn't fit. "Sports" includes physical challenges.

Chess, board games, etc, can be competitions...but it isn't sports.

We just need a better word than "esports." It doesn't belong. It's a competition, but not a sport.

I do in fact like to play Donkey Kong, but I don't wear my Green Lantern pajamas while I do it, I just wear my Sailor Moon underwear. It helps me relax.
