Back in 1999 all my friends with 64's had Mario Kart and wouldnt dare play DKR with me, or if they did they would cringe and say "who are these characters? who is conker? WHERE IS DONKEY KONG??"
Aside from the characters in the game, I believe DKR is better than Mario Kart 64 in every way......more tracks, boss races, aeroplane + hovercraft, more challenging and a better multiplayer battle mode. In fact, DKR is better than Mario Kart Wii!!!! IMO

Am I the only one that prefers Diddy Kong Racing??

This going against many things in my life, but I agree with you :O, i loved the characters and tracks,

Mario kind of grows on you after you play it for a while (since you begin to say, what is that he can't do) what's next? Mario playing American football?

If you had asked me a couple of years ago, I might have agreed with you and I still prefer the non-randomised item set-up of DKR to Mario Kart, but having recently revisited Diddy Kong, I would say Mario Kart 64 has stood the test of time far better. The choppy frame-rates and awkward flight controls of DKR simply don't do it for me anymore.

DKR is great in it's own way and definitely has more variety, but Mario Kart 64 is just a better game all around. In my opinion.

I loved the boss races, but the silver coin challenge went too far for me. Some of those coins were well outside the normal path,

I couldn' agree more. Mario Kart 64 was nice and dandy but Diddy Kong racing was way better game imo. It may very well be my the most played game on N64.

And I'm gonna go ahead and say that Snowboard Kids was even better! No not really, but after DKR, I think Snowboard Kids was my next favorite racing game like that. Mario Kart is fun, but I grow tired of it a lot faster. Probably because we've played it on every system ever.

I have played both of them equally since these games were used pretty much for family night.. my parents use to play this with all my friends in the neighborhood until like 2 in the morning.

Honestly, I love the characters more in mario than DK, I love both series but Yoshi is my main dino, yah know. The overall playing is better in Mario than in DK... sorry.

Mario Kart 64 is my most played 64 game. That said, when I rented Diddy Kong Racing, it was definitely better.

I owned both and I agree. Diddy Kong Racing had more great levels and challenges. Loved the fact some of the races were designed with hovercrafts/planes in mind.

I had both of them and love 'em both.

DKR has more brilliant level design, but the power-up system in that one is a bit dull, since you always get the power-ups you want as opposed to Mario Kart's random item box system. In both games the A.I. cheats, but that's beside the point since both games are at their best when played with friends. Mario Kart 64 is more intense with all the funny and cruel bugs and the item system. In DKR it's easy to win a race if you get ahead and just gorge all the bananas and get massive speed boost and your opponent is left with nothing :(

Diddy Kong Racing was great, but... Super Mario Kart > Diddy Kong Racing :D The original had the best driving model and best levels... played the hell out of that game. I could lap the person in second place.

Back in the day, yes. I was always a mario kart fan, but then diddy kong racing came along and was a great game. The single player game was a strange mix of racing/adventure that worked really well. I got it when it came out on DS, and just couldn't get into it again. I don't know why

Oh, yeah. The adventure mode in DKR was awesome as opposed to the dull Grand Prix cups in MK.

And if you could beat TT's times you are a God among men.
