Can anyone recommend me an action-RPG with a good magic system?

As the title says. I'm a big Harry Potter fan and with options being limited as far as official games go, I was wondering if someone could suggest an RPG game with a strong magic system and a good variety of spells. The game doesn't have to feature witches, wizards or wands but weapon based magic like with a staff would be preferable. One game I'm currently considering is Skyrim, with the College of Winterhold, but with a lot of the enemies in that game having melee weapons I wasn't sure how well a magic-only run would work in that.

Dragon's Dogma.

Straight up one of the best Action-RPG's I've ever played that gives you some of the most powerful magicks in gaming.

with Skyrim, you're gonna want magic overhaul mods, like Colorful Magic, which adds hundreds of spells and spell themed weapons.

maybe a game like Lichdom. I don't really know how you're defining "action-rpg" as that term gets thrown around pretty liberally.

@Ish_basic: Action-RPG usually refers to... well, non-turn-based combat.

Usually no random encounters, you see something and you start casting without pausing to select a certain thing, and also no keystrokes. Something similar to Skyrim, Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, Kingdom's of Amalur, etc.

Skyrim has a "good" magic system, but if we're counting true magic, shouts shouldn't really count.

Some of the previous ES games let you literally create your own spells and name them, so thats pretty cool.

Elder scrolls games will also scratch that itch but I can't think of much else that could.

Magicka, if you are unopposed to a goofy, charming, isometric action-rpg :D

I mean if you want a good magic system, this is it. You are basically given a bunch of elements, but the way you put them together determines what form or spell they take. Use water, you just make a blast of water. Use fire, you make a blast of fire. Combine fire and water, you get steam. Combine Steam with arcane and lighting, you get DEATH RAY! Combine shield element with stone, get a stone wall. Cast the AoE version of shield and health, get health mines that explode and heal you.

It might seem simple at first and kind of silly, but if you're truly looking for a game about magic, Magicka is what you want.

@Ish_basic: I'm on PlayStation so mods are out of the question. By action-RPG I mean with real time combat.

yeah, but are loot-grinds out of the question? Like Diablo 3 or the Adventures of Van Helsing? Even Dragon Age has real time combat and the mages in Dragon Age, I don't care which game, are always really powerful. Most MMOs are real time, so that would be stuff like ESO and Tera. And, like I said, Lichdom is basically an FPS with wizardry instead of guns.

@Ish_basic: No, most MMO's rely on keystrokes.

so if I play a game with a keyboard, it's no longer action? But I think what you're getting at is the older style MMOs like WoW with auto-attacks and tab targetting. I'm sure there's some newer titles that still do that, but the majority of new stuff I see is active dodging/blocking, 1 to 1 inputs in combat commands. There are some titles like GW2 which kind of straddle the two styles, but even ESO, which is very traditional in the broad strokes leans more towards action.

but I'm not trying to be pedantic. The point is, if I look for the action-rpg tag at a digital store, I'm gonna get everything from JRPGs and WRPGs and CRPGs, to Diablo style games, rogue likes, MMOs, survival games...makes it hard to give recommendations without more details.

@Ish_basic: Well, idk about you, but when I play a game and I'm pretty 1 and 2, it's not very action oriented.

In this regard, I think he's referring to no "commands", just button presses or clicks, for combat anyway.

As in, you click, it does whatever attack.

"But clicking should be no different then pressing the keys." I can't really explain WHY it is, it just... is.

@Ish_basic: Sorry for not being specific. Real time as in games like Elder Scrolls or Dragon's Dogma.

This this this. The combat top notch here and gives you a lot of freedom with how you develop your character. You could go all in with magic, or some kind of warrior mage if you like.

And the gameplay is actually fun, IN AN RPG!
