For me it is the first one. No one else will agree but it really was the best in it's time. A link to the Past was great too and those two sum up my over all interest in the series as a whole. You may need to have been born in the 70's to relate with me here. But other games were blowing right past Zelda in the 3D age. It will always be best as a 2D game for me just like Mario and Metroid. But what do I know?
Definitely Wind Waker. It has the most wholesome and seamless game world in it, and it is just joy to play in every way.
In other 3D zeldas you got the desert areas, snow areas and so on, making them very generic platformers. In Wind Waker they discarded this approach and build a much more believeable 'open' world.
Sadly, in BotW, they went back to the 'here's the snow level, here's the desert level' approach, which makes the world of BotW rather silly place to adventure in.
My first Zelda game was A Link to the Past, but my favorite is Ocarina of Time. It really opened up the game world. Big areas and cool boss fights. Closely followed by Majoras's Mask, even though I thought the three-day cycle was kinda limiting. BotW is okay, but I don't enjoy the survival-gameplay or the breakable weapons. And I miss the massive dungeons, boss fights and cool gadgets.
I enjoy what I've played of Breath of the Wild but my top pick is the beloved Ocarina of Time. If the 3DS remake ever comes to Switch I'm sure most standing with BotW will change opinions.
And that's not to say I don't enjoy BotW, the open world sections are good. Dungeons and end-game however, are not that great.
My first Legend of Zelda game is A Link to the Past on SNES. But I wouldn't say it's the best Zelda game, that honor still goes to,,,Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time N64 and it was by far the best Zelda game I have ever played in my childhood. Of course, second place goes to Wind Waker GC and 3rd goes to Breath of the Wild. I have played all Zelda games in my life time and this is how I rank them all: (in this order)
