I'd have to go with Assassin's creed games 1, 2, and Brotherhood composed by Jesper Kyd. That music is fantastic and fit the game perfectly. I definitely added those albums to my MP3 collection.

The Silent Hill soundtracks take a close second.

In terms of recent games I was really impressed with the Ni No Kuni soundtrack. I finished with the game months ago but still walk around with some of the songs stuck in my head.

For older games, I'd say Donkey Kong Country and Legend of Zelda. Stickerbrush Symphony is one of my all time favorite songs.

For more recent games, Halo comes to mind immediately. Nier, a lesser known game, has an incredible soundtrack as well. It's hauntingly beautiful.

I like so many, but there are a few that stand out above the rest for me:

  • Chrono Trigger (Probably my all time favorite OST, ever)
  • Silent Hill 2 (Though really, the whole series, especially Yamaoka's stuff)
  • Earthbound
  • Afro Samurai
  • Castle Crashers
  • Secret of Evermore
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Katamari Damacy

I'm sure there are so many that I'll not think of

Need for Speed - The Run's soundtrack by Bryan Tyler was one of the best parts of the game, enough said.

Modern Warfare 2's superior soundtrack added a lot to the campaign. Really stands out in the franchise, in my opinion.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, enough said. They should have stayed with the new direction they took. I remember how disappointed I was with The Two Thrones.

GRID 2. If Codemasters keep getting non-licensed soundtrack made for this series, they need to start using it more often inside the games. Just try the demo, guys. Checkpoint race.

Some more pretty good ones that made me get the OST collections: Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, Devil May Cry 3, Half-Life games, Split/Second.

I'm surprised no one mentioned any of these games yet.

There are a number of games that for me, had outstanding soundtracks, but ones that come to mind straight away would be games such as Mass Effect 3, which really was able to capture the sense of epicness occuring in a war waging throughout the entire galaxy. Also, the Fallout 3 soundtrack comes to mind as it was so distinctive, putting the contemporary music into the future where it could still be considered contemporary. And also for me, Oblivion's soundtrack was just ridiculously good, this is probabaly just from my fond memories of walking around and exploring and having that incredible soundtrack subtly in the background.

There are many more, but those three examples are the first that come to mind. I mean you can't forget the soundtracks of GTA Vice City and San Andreas either.
