hey guys just curious which version of Doom you like the best. Obviously the PC was the original, so i'm really refering to consoles

-32x

-Saturn

-Jaguar

-3do

-snes

-Playstation

do any of you guys own all versions? I'm just curious if the Saturn and 3do versions are about the same or if there is a huge difference. I've played the Playstation version, 32x, and PC.

the 32X version has a small screen, levels are missing and has crap music the SNES version is censored, it has the worst graphics but awesome music the Jaguar Version has the best graphics but no music and that's all I know, I can't really tell you about the other versions

from what ive seen , the PS1 version is the best one, with the Jaguar version not far behined.

the SNES version is laggy ,very laggy, and has reduced visuals, though still impressive for the SNES (even with the SuperFX chip)

the Saturn version is a mess sadly, it was a rushed port and its very laggy, while visually its on par with the PS1 version , its laggy, sad since Quake is also on Saturn and runs well and looks good, The Japanese version was actually a different port (it came out later) and runs much better then the US/PAL version)

the 3DO version has some really amazing music, but it looks terrible, and is pretty laggy too.

They say the PS1 version is the best and I have to agree. But that applys to the old console ports. Obviously the XBLA version is the best console version today. The SNES version is poor compared to the other versions but it deserves props for being a 32-bit game on a 16-bit machine. And the N64 version deserves a mention too, since it's completely different to the other versions (sounded good on paper but turned out poor, though).

they're ok, they have their flaws as well...

the graphics are too pixelated, it's hard too see what's going on sometimes, the games are censored, they suffer from slowdowns and I think the music was changed but I can't be sure

Playstation being one of the latest versions of DOOM on consoles, is most probably going to be one of the best, I have played most versions of it and can say out of the ones mentioned the playstation one is the best. But DOOM for GBA contains all the material from the PS1 game plus a few extras on a handheld that you can take anywhere with you, making it the big daddy of all the versions :D

only 1 vote so far? i guess i forgot to put "poll" in the topic.

and yeah i know the snes version is the weakest, but its not far behind the 32x version (argued to be better by some). and i didnt put the GBA versions in the poll because the GBA is quite a bit newer than the other consoles. I have the Wolfenstein3D port on the GBA and its great (except for lack of music). I dont think the "censorship" part is that bad, its not like they took out all the Nazi references (i think the Snes did though).

The PlayStation! it uses codes for levels and no saves... so old school :P. But my favourite is probably the Xbox Live Arcade one on the Xbox 360. It has multiplayer and all all four of the Doom episodes :)

The version for PS1 is the best. But not the original release, Final Doom is the best one.

playstation wins in a landslide. not surprised. most of you may have not even played the other versions. I was just curious who owned more than 1 copy of doom for separate consoles (excluding the xbox360 arcade version)

I'd go with the Playstation version, it's as close to the original as you'll get, unless you have a 360 and Live, then you can simply download the original (with online supoprt) from there.

Sadly Ultimate Doom have been removed from Xbox Live for some unknown reason its all recent too.

SNES Doom was "sorta" censored, the only thing they've changed are the end game text after each chapters, the lack of satanic pentagram and demonic face on some textures were due to engine limitation so i'd hardly call SNES Doom censored. Also, sprite could only face you, no infight were possible and to play through episode 2 and episode 3 you needed to be minimum on hurt me plenty. Though the Japanese version of SNES Doom was different, you could play any episode on any difficulty, enemies had a marker on the automap and they were much less agressive. It didn't had good graphic and circle strafing was impossible, but it had extremely good music.

SNES Doom was actually the most PC faithful version, as funny as that sounds. Of course, it was a very downgraded port, but the level architecture remains untouched and the textures (even if only on walls) are a lot less monotonous than in the other versions and it had great music. For example the PSX (or PS1) Doom, while the best at the time, had different level architecture than the PC original, more monotone textures and a different, ambient soundtrack.

edit: here is proof so you won't say I'm talking nonsense

Doom PC (DOS)

Doom PSX

Colored lighting, but different level architecture (note the missing stairs) and textures on walls.

SNES Doom

Yeah, it's low res, has missing animations and no textures on ceiling and floor, but note that it's level architecture (see stairs) and textures look closer to the PC original.

PC Doom (DOS) music

PSX Doom music (totaly different)

I've played the snes, 32x, playstation and Jaguar versions of the game and the Jaguar version is the best by far. I'm guessing the PS version will get the most votes just because it was the most played, but the best graphics, framerate and control were on the Jag version even though it didn't have the music. Besides the system link on the Jaguar version was the best anyway.

I've only played 32x Saturn, and PS1. I remember Saturn was the worst (only becaue it was terrible) and 32X was about equal to PS1.

it was a very rushed port, especially when Quake on the Saturn, runs quite smoothly, and is on par with the N64 version (its debatable which is better)

Yeah, I wasn't saying the Saturn has crappy graphics or anything, but Doom sucked on it. It's funny how much better the 32x version is compared to the Saturn version.

I actually heard the Japanese version of Saturn Doom (which is quite rare) is better, it was released after the US/PAL version , apparently they handed it over to a different porting team, and the Japanese version runs and looks about as good the PS1 version.

Sadly , the good version of the game was released in a market that probably does not care too much about it.

And yes, the 32X might look worse, but it runs alot better, and its think its pretty disgraceful on the part of the developer that the Saturn port runs so badly.

PS1 version:

32X version:

The 32X version is hardly the same as the PS1 version as it's even worse than the Jaguar version and has horrible music (a "farting" soundtrack).

I'll add these two too:

Jaguar Doom:

Doom 64:

Doom 64 looks the best but it's actually the most boring version imo. But the worst has to be 3DO one (because of terrible frame rates and a tiny gameplay window).

Anyway, Doom is still the best on the PC and you should go with that version. The PC version also supports mods which can make it look a lot better and everyone has a good enough PC for Doom.

Sry for tripplepost.

one thing that was good about the 3DO version is the music, I wish they kept that music for all future versions, as it blows away all the ambient music of the later releases.

here are some videos for a few versions

3DO Doom - music is pretty amazing , but the game runs slowly, and really small screen

Jaguar Doom - good port, let down by a lack of music

Saturn Doom - looks good but runs terrible , it also has the terrible new music.

SNES Doom - not a good version , but impressive considering the hardware (even if it uses the SuperFX2 chip)

Doom 64 isn't an option. Doom 64 isn't Doom. It's an entirely new Doom game. If we went that route, then we could say Doom 3 on PC/XBox is the best.

In my opinion, of course, I felt that the PS1 version of Doom was the best consoled version. I was nice playing some of the levels in the PS1 version and the music track felt eerie at times.
