Advance Wars is rubbish unless it's your first game of that kind. I actually bought a DS and that game for like stupid money and played it for an agonising couple of hours before I sold the DS and all it's shit six games for the princely sum of £15 after spending a fortune buying it all Nintendo I hate you so much.
Oh yeah, the topic.
Sid Meir's Alpha Centuari.
I prefer this game to Civilisation although it is very similar. It's way more interesting though. You choose from 8 or so factions who have all just landed on Alpha Centauri after escaping Earth after winning Civilisation with space victory and each leader starts the whole process again after having learned nothing from the original game and set about destroying each other again only this time instead of for a country you're fighting for an ideology be it an industrialist or a tree hugging Gian.
This game is so much more interesting that CIV though and differs most in that you really need to design your own units which some people might find fun and others boring. I think it's the most fun aspect though. Have you ever made a squad of trained psi marines and sailed them across the ocean in a giant invincible floating worm boil? Well you can in this game.
The game introduces a new land type: fungus which has various things depending on your technology. It grows and spawns worms which are basically barbarians but a fungal bloom can spawn 10 giant monsters and destroy a giant outpost city in a turn.
But a much more streamlined research and interesting diplomacy system makes this game more varied than CIV and it's my favourite turn based strategy game.
Keeping track of all your designed units is a bit of a pain but only because the interface is just a teensy bit buggy.
