What do you think is the best single player RPG ever?

FFXII for JRPGs because of its grand scale world and 100+ hours of playing time. There's just so much to do, so much to see, and every part of it was breathtaking.
For WRPGs I have to go with Neverwinter Nights. It also has 100+ hours of gameplay and so much to do. Oblivion is also a good one, even though I have yet to play it.
This is a bit of a vague one since the difference in Japanese and Western styles is fairly different. I didn't play any of the PC ones of old so I can't bust out the Ultima references or things of that ilk. I grew up on the NES and console style so that's what I know. This also goes back to how does it fare to todays games. Can you compare the first Final Fantasy to the current one? RPG is also a relative term, Odin Sphere was mentioned but it is nothing like Final Fantasy, I'd call it an action RPG and leave that genre to its own comparisons.
If you mean an RPG in the traditional style of a single person or party of characters, in the Japanese style then I'd have to go with:
Breath of Fire 4.
I may be biased since BoF is my favorite RPG series but the art, music, story, characters, and dialog are all spectacular. Along with combat that's just different enough to be interesting without being too unique for its own good. I recommend that anyone should check out this series (except 5 which is the death of the series) since they are excellent examples of a company that decided to make a different RPG when FF and CT were ruling the SNES.
My second choice would be Phantasy Star. In it's day it was so far ahead of anything else it was almost scary. People didn't know how to describe it. The term RPG was still applied to D&D and only a small percentage of games played in that manner. This was the reason people owned the SMS and it's a crime that so few people got to play it. It was of course followed up by a succession of great titles that made Phantasy Star the RPG series of the early 90s.
Honorable mention goes to Skies of Arcadia (for Dreamcast) becasue it was awesome and it came out at the perfect time.
I would have picked Panzer Dragoon Saga but it's sort of it's own category so it stands alone in its own greatness.
Heres a list of greats in no particular order, some represent the series as a whole:
Dragon Warrior NES
Ultima: Exodus NES
Cosmic Fantasy 2 TG16
Lunar SCD
Lufia SNES
Miracle Warriors SMS
Super Hydlide GEN
Suikoden 1-3 PS/PS2
Dragon Quest 8 PS2
Persona PS
Chrono Trigger SNES
The 7th Saga SNES
Heimdall SCD
Shining in the Darkness GEN
Illusion City MCD
Eldorado's Gate SS
Grandia SS/PS2
Wild Arms PS/PS2
Tales of Destiny II PS
Final Fantasy XII PS2
Fav. Western RPG: Oblivion
Fav. Japenese RPG: Kingdom Hearts

KH is an action RPG.
My impression was the traditional Japanese RPG like DQ or FF are what's being talked about.

Wow you are rare one. Breath of Fire fan. I thought I was the last surviving memeber of the clan lol.
Still, As much I loved Breath of Fire IV, I think best RPG of all time is pushing it a bit lol. It is vastly underrated game and could be best Breath of Fire game (difficult to pick between that one first Breath of Fire), but best RPG of all time? You are right, it is bit biased choice.
[QUOTE="jed-at-war"]I forgot - What about Ocarina of Time?TriangleHard
most would consider it as action/adventure game.
The only Zelda game to be an RPG is Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link, which is an action RPG. Anyone wo believes all the other Zeldas are RPG's are seriously deluded and/or misled.
The term itself was, back in the SNES, PSX and N64 days, thrown around as a sign of prestige, but ultimately, an RPG is an RPG. Anything else is...well, soemthing else :P
My favourite RPG is without a doubt The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall. Buggy as hell, but by far the best game in the series (and I have played all of them, and have beaten the first three). Probably the absolute best main quest dungeons ever, and so much was done with teh XNgine that it's unbelievable. The game is extremely sophisticated for what it is and the era it came out in.
