I'm personally a huge fan of the N64 controller. I think it's brilliant design. No other controller can let you switch between d-pad and analogue control and provide a perfect, natural feel for both. And the z-trigger is an awesome innovation that's yet to be duplicated.nolan-
I actually wasn't a fan of the N64 controller. The whole left side was pretty much obsolete.
Sega Dreamcast because contoured to your hands almost perfectly. 360 tops it, but that's not legacy.
From what I have used: I'd say its a tie between the PSone dualshock and the Gamecube controllers, both fit into your hand perfectly and most if not all the buttons are easy to reach. I have also used an N64 controller and I find it quite comfortable and its anolog stick revolutionary, but the left shoulder button and the D-pad were hard to reach if I remember correctly.:( I also think the Mega drive/Genesis controller was great, too.
it isnt hard to reach its just that most games dont use it or isnt required to useFrom what I have used: I'd say its a tie between the PSone dualshock and the Gamecube controllers, both fit into your hand perfectly and most if not all the buttons are easy to reach. For me, it's a tie between the Gamecube and Genesis 3-button controllers. Both have near perfect button placement, and are just plain comfortable to hold and use. If I had to pick one, though, it'd be the Gamecube wired controller.
it doesnt contour your hands perfectly it curves inwards instead of outwards so you have to cramp your wrists close together to hold itSega Dreamcast because contoured to your hands almost perfectly. 360 tops it, but that's not legacy.

I said "almost" :D I really loved the Dreamcast controller.

And the z-trigger is an awesome innovation that's yet to be duplicated. The way I see it, multi-platform games generally felt "pretty good" using the N64 controller, but games exclusive to the N64 (especially first-party titles) felt perfect using the controller (Mario 64, Zelda OoT/MM, Goldeneye/PD, etc).nolan-thats my favorite controller but I hated how the control stick wears down so easily
Dreamcast and N64 were really close i think. The Dreamcast was so good because the joystick and d-pad felt good. The 360 dpad is located terribly, and the joystick on the dualshock is just as bad.
Although, i did like the original Genesis (3button) controller.

That's one thing I don't like about the Dual Shock pads, the sticks are placed in a really uncomfortable manner, especially for FPS and TPSgames. Every time I try to play SoCom or UT on the PS2, it gets somewhat painful to use the sticks after a few minutes.
