I was damn near obsessed with FFVI when it first came out. The only FF I took the time to max out every character to level 99.

I got to say FF8.

I'm sick of typing out roman numerals for FF's.

Gotta agree with the TC when he says FFVI. Excellent story, great and varied characters, the Esper system, and, to top it off, Kefka Palazzo.

hmmm...thats a tough one. i really liked the world that was constructed in ffxii. towns were huge and filled with a potpourri of bustling peoples, the outside worlds were vast and brought to life with weather systems and seasons, and the player is never taken out of this world with sharp transitions to seemingly distant battle screens. its too bad that even though a few of the characters had charm, none had the depth of character of tidus or cloud.

ii is good too. characters level up the parameters that they need and there was a good deal of customization available per character. while the story itself wasnt as good as x's or vii's, i felt most involved by ii's tales than by any other ff title because of the keyword conversation system.

My favorite is FFX, with FFXII in second place. Still, why in the world are people afraid of saying FFVII? Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and if someone says that person is wrong, they are in fact the wrong ones.

also, ill add that xi was a really good final fantasy. it was one of my best memories in the series to be open to a world so vast. there are airship busing services. chocobos were at their best in the series because they were genuinely needed for more than a bird-specific jump or 2. ff has always had party based combat, but it was on a whole new level when the strategy was among different players.

My favs are..

1. FFVII

2. FFVI

3. FFIV

4. FFXIII

FFVI is the best in the series IMO. It had some really awesome scenes that would blow practically every other game out of the sky if it was redone in CG.

FFIII SNES (FFVI) will always be the closest to my heart. That sounds so cheesy but it's what got me into the series and still consider it the best one. By the way, I ALWAYS will call it FFIII SNES because that's the game I played! ;)

I like FFXII for the gameplay, but the story and character weren't that great. The open-world and game design is tremendous and still surpasses every FF game out there.

As for FFXIII, it's probably not my favorite FF game but Lightning is becoming my favorite FF character of all-time. Sazh is becoming one of my favorite characters as well. Also, I'm enjoying FFXIII much more than I enjoyed FFX, but it's probably because of Lightning and Sazh. Auron was cool but the rest of FFX's cast was pretty bad, IMO. Plus, FFXIII's story is more interesting than FFX.

If I were to put my favorite FF games in order, it'd be like this (no spin-offs, just the main series' games. Remakes count. I left out FFXI):

  1. Final Fantasy III SNES (VI)
  2. Final Fantasy IV DS
  3. Final Fantasy XII
  4. Final Fantasy XIII (That's fair I think)
  5. Final Fantasy IX
  6. Final Fantasy VII
  7. Final Fantasy III DS
  8. Final Fantasy V
  9. Final Fantasy X
  10. Final Fantasy VIII
  11. Final Fantasy I & II GBA

Here are my favorite characters from the series:

  1. Lightning
  2. Terra
  3. Sazh
  4. Vivi
  5. Tifa
  6. Auron
  7. Aerith (The Crisis Core/Advent Children version)
  8. Zack Fair (I hate Cloud! :P )
  9. Sabin
  10. Basch

My favorite spin-offs:

  1. Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions
  2. Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings
  3. Final Fantasy Tactics A2
  4. Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core
  5. Final Fantasy Dissidia

Final Fantasy XII. No random encounters, a great story (which many people seem to dislike for some reason), a more detailed and interesting world than any other in the series (with the possible exception of X), the gambit system which eliminates the "press X until everyone's dead" tediousness of combat without removing the fun or challenge, plenty of monsters to hunt on the side, and no random encounters. I know I said that last one twice but it's that important to me.

And because I can, here's my ranking of the series from best to worst:

FFXII > FFX > VIII > VII > V > IX > VI > III > II > I > IV

If I left anything out, that's because I haven't played it yet. Except for X-2, which isn't technically part of the main series (but if you really must know, I'd put it between X and VIII).

FFVI is mediocre at best and FFIV is just awful. I don't understand for the life of me what people see in these games that would make them worth considering as candidates for best Final Fantasy.

FFVI & IV were classics on the SNES, During that era they were amazing. If you don't like them because of the outdated graphics, well hopefully 'if' Square remakes FFVI they'll go all out on it. If you didn't like the story.. well.. im not sure why you wouldn't. Kinda hard to figure out why you don't like them in the first place.

Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー?) is a media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, and is developed and owned by Square Enix (formerly Squaresoft). The franchise centers on a series of fantasy and science-fantasy console role-playing games (RPGs), but includes motion pictures, anime, printed media, and other merchandise. The series began in 1987 as an eponymous video game developed to save Square from bankruptcy; the game was a success and spawned sequels. The video game series has since branched into other genres such as tactical role-playing, action role-playing, massively multiplayer online role-playing, and racing. Although most Final Fantasy installments are independent stories with various different settings and main characters, they feature common elements that define the franchise. Recurring elements include plot themes, character names, and game mechanics. Plots center on a group of heroes battling a great evil while exploring the characters' internal struggles and relationships. Character names are often derived from the history, languages, and mythologies of cultures worldwide. The series has been commercially and critically successful; it is Square Enix's best selling video game franchise, with more than 96 million units shipped, and one of the best-selling video game franchises. It was awarded a star on the Walk of Game in 2006, and holds seven Guinness World Records in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008. The series is well known for its innovation, visuals, and music, such as the inclusion of full motion videos, photo-realistic character models, and orchestrated music by Nobuo Uematsu. Final Fantasy has been a driving force in the video game industry. The video game series has affected Square's business practices and its relationships with other video game developers. It has also introduced many features now common in console RPGs and has been credited with helping to popularize RPGs in markets outside Japan.

I hated everything about FF VI. The characters lacked depth, the story was not all that it was cracked up to be, the graphics were not consistent - the enemy sprites were super detailed and filled the entire screen while your characters are small and massively underdetailed when compared to your enemies, the music was not memorable (Dancing Mad is a musical disaster) and the villain of the game was the most crappiest. And this was the first FF game I played. I would have gave up on the franchise if it wasn't for the PSX era ones. The previous titles were a mess (Though I haven't tried the DS ones) when I played on the NES.

IMO Chrono Trigger was the far superior game. Even most critics agree with me. (95.1 % rating for Chrono Trigger and FF VI had 93.7 % - both scores are from Game Rankings.)

7. im sure the fact that it was my first FF has a part to play....but i still think its better than any FF released since and before (from what i have played of the earlier FFs....my main gripe with earleir games i suppose is that theres too much grinding. i hate grinding). great gameplay, epic in size, wonderful soundtrack, great script (though i think theres a dodgy translaion in places), good characters, interesting story thats well told..overall just a crackin game. oh and it has chocobo racing...and its awsome :). imho that was the limit break of FF...the series has gone backwards since.

I don't recall mentioning anything about graphics or story. So you really shouldn't assume that's what I don't like about these games. But that's partly my fault for not explaining properly. So here it is.

Final Fantasy IV is awful because it basically plays itself. It doesn't let you pick your characters or change your party or decide which jobs/skills/magic you want to have or tweak stats or otherwise customize your characters in any meaningful way. FFI, II, and III all give you more than this. About the only thing you can decide is how to equip your party, but since there's really no good reason to go with anything besides the strongest stuff available, it's a meaningless decision. You're basically given a pre-made group of characters (whether you like 'em or not) and sent off into the world to battle monsters every five steps, which is essentially pressing A until they all die and healing when necessary; no real thought or strategy required.

Final Fantasy VI is a bit better, allowing you to actually build your own party by choosing from a large cast of characters. Again, though, these characters are not nearly customizable enough. They all have their unique skills that can't be changed, and you can't really do anything with them aside from teach them all the same magic spells and give them a couple of relics. Plus, they feel really unbalanced; some are so useful you'll be using their ability in every single round of combat, while others are basically useless and do nothing more than take up space. All the Final Fantasy games that came after (and some that came before) do a much better job of letting you really make the characters your own. Thus, mediocre.

I can handle "outdated" graphics. I did grow up with the NES, after all. And considering these are both SNES titles, that's actually an improvement. And story? Irrelevant. If a game is bad, then Shakespeare himself couldn't write a story good enough to make me like it.

1.FFVII - we all know why...

2.FFIX - summed up everything good about the series

3.FFVI

4. FFVIII - a dissapointment after 7 but a great game in it's own right

are people forgetting 9? Apparently it was Hironobu Sakaguchi's favourite.

I think it's a bit of a toss up between 6, 7 and 8 for me. Although i absolutely LOVED FF6 too. Had one of my favorite characters ever as the lead. I guess I would give an edge to FF7 because I spent a lot more time on it and I pretty much loved every aspect of it and the whole love story aspect of FF8 bothered me. Then I'd say FF10 because I really did have a lot of fun with that game, and it had it's flaws but it had a lot of heart too. And then I'd say FF9 to round out the top 5. FYI, I most certainly wouldn't place FF13 amongst these because it just doesn't have the same substance or atmospheric quality that these classics had. Not a bad game, just doesn't match up.

1. FF7

2. FF6

3. FF8

4. FF10

5. FF9

My fav is FF12: reverent wings for the DS. It has a unique combat system being a combination of real-time strategy and rpg that i just loved. The summoning armies of minions to follow the leaders was a refreshing change for the franchise.

My favourite is VIII although VII and VI are right up there next to it, there isn't much in it at all ;). IX was the last in the series I personally felt achieved greatness, the loss of a world map has been a massive blow to the series in my eyes and I would rate Tales of Symphonia higher than both X and XII.
