Best Final Fantasy?

There's a Square Enix publisher sale going on right now (not advertising) and I was wondering what the best Final Fantasy game/s are.

I am pretty tough on Japanese games because, well, I just don't like the whole look of them, but I feel like I should keep giving them a chance since so many people love them.

Also, there are some good or interesting titles on sale as well: Omikron is on sale for like 1 dollar, starring The David Bowie; and own a little bit of gaming history's darkest moment and "suck it down" with Daikatana :D

Anyway, Final Fantasy recommendations?

Final Fantasy IX is always a solid choice, probably the most traditional JRPG one from the PSOne era. If you want some anime JRPG FF7 is you're go to. Be careful with the steam versions of some of the games, I know some of them are mobile ports.

Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions.

Final Fantasy VI. It is my favorite by far, but IX might be the better game overall. Both are great.

Definitely 7. It was the first jrpg to show the world what they could really do. One of my favorite games of all time.

@mrbojangles25: Final Fantasy VII, every game reviewer has always said this one is the best, it's also one of the best RPG's of all time.

like I said, I am skeptical but open to it. Maybe one of the best JRPGs of all time? We'll see how the sub-genre's alleged best stacks against an entire genre.

Bought it, btw. Looking forward to it. Remember playing it waaaaaaaaaaay back in the day (was a PS2 flagship, yes?) and being really impressed by the spells and cutscenes.

For me it would be a toss up between Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, and X. I think any one of those would be a great one to get.

for me it is :

Final Fantasy IV, VI, 7 and Tactics. Tactics being my most favorite.

Didn't you ask this last year? Did you buy any then? VI, VII and IX are awesome.

For me it'd have to be X.

X-2 was OK in my opinion....(I know it gets a lot of hate.)

But then again X is the only one I've played through and finished. I also like some of the DS titles. Echoes of Time, Rings of Fate, etc.

I like VI because it's just detailed enough to make me use my imagination and not so un-detailed that it isn't too primitive.

Favorite is definitely VI. Game is an absolute masterpiece and I've heard even people who aren't into JRPGs enjoy it.

This is actually a lot more difficult for me to answer than it was 10 years ago, and what's funny is none of the newer titles are even in contention.

I really really like FFV, FFXII (moreso after the remaster) and FF Tactics.

If I had to choose right now, it would probably be XII since it is freshest in my mind, but i'm sure over time that V will overtake it once again.

Only reason I don't put VI in their category is because it doesn't have as much replay value for me as those. But it's story is defintely my favorite.

I don't even play this genre anymore but Final Fantasy VII will still be my favorite game of all time. I was around 14 or 15 when I went through this and the story blew me away. It's hard to say how it would be received by one of these new generation gamers though. I guess we'll find out whenever Square Enix stops dragging their heels and puts out this remake we've all been waiting for since the turn of the millennium. Anyway, it's a solid pick.

Final Fantasy VII is my favourite game of all time so I'd recommend that, however its not aged well, even VI and older have aged better because they had less detail.

Final Fantasy IX is also a great game, more traditional RPG medieval like setting.

Wow + FF = 14 a realm reborn

Haven't played all of them so I can't really tell what's the best but my favorite would be Final Fantasy IV and Tactics: War of the Lion. Really love both the story compare to VI, VII, and IX.

My thoughts exactly. My personal favorites are VIII and X but I definitely agree with this list

FFVII has great start, but after you leave the big city it turns into a mediocre JRPG and you will get bored with it pretty soon.

FFVIII is the best imo. The story stays strong, the game keeps to the style it adapts from the beginning, and on the whole the game is the best JRPG I've experienced.

Eh after playing most of them, the best Final Fantasy game is the one you never play. Most of them are incredibly easy and lack balance.

The ones I liked the best are 9,7, 14, and FFT. 4,5,6 and 8 are okay as well. but the former are a bit dated by today's standards and 8 has an obnoxious draw system. 10 has the most annoying protagonist to date, 13 is a huge grind and simply one of the worst. 15 is as deep as a puddle of water and full of ads and other immersion breakers. 12 some people like but it's annoying to have to program the AI of your teammates.

Oh and avoid any title that ends in "-2" or "-3"

My favorites are VII and VI, but most of them are great games.

Best FF game ever is tactics. This game really needs a true sequel imo.

As for the numbered entries, it’s a toss up between 6 or 7 for me, followed closely by 4 and 9.

Best Final Fantasy is an oxymoron.

Final Fantasy XIII and VIII are my personal favourites. well that's what i think anyway..

Final Fantasy 7 or 9 for me.

Which FF is best for you really depends on your tastes. Fan favorites have a big range from FF6 to 10, and that's just the main titles. Games like FF Tactics, Theatrythm or Crystal Chronicles have their own fanbases as well.

If it is the "Anime" style of JRPGs you don't like, then maybe FF8 is the best choice to start. It looks very western-ish for a FF game.
