Are there any modern games that have a huge focus on simplistic gameplay?

I'm looking for a modern title that has a simplistic style of gameplay, but is challenging. Also, I'd like for the game to not have massive cutscenes that are like 300,000 hours long before the game even begins. Something that doesn't begin extremely slow, but instead puts you right into the action. Something that isn't a shooter, lol.

Any ideas? :)

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is a high quality game without many cutscenes. You can get into the action of the game soon after you begin the story. The combat looks complex, but playing it is rather simple.

Knack launched with the PS4 and is an entertaining title. The gameplay is simple, but the progression is rewarding.

Shadow Warrior is another good one. Kind of an old school arena type shooter, with dumb-ass hordes that swarm you until you die. You have a sword and special powers that you can use (but totally don't have to). At least if you rely solely on guns, gameplay is really simple: you shoot everything that moves until it is dead, you run your ass off, or else you die.

The game is actually fun as shit if you're into that sort of thing, though it does last a bit too long and can get kind of repetitive. But otherwise, it's a really cool "modern" game with some simple gameplay. You point, you shoot, you run, and that's the game. Also, as a bonus, you can save whenever the hell you want to, so it doesn't force you to spend a single second looking for a goddamn save station so you can go to bed without losing your progress.

I'm not sure if by shooter you mean first person shooters and not shmups, but if so, try Galak-Z. It's like a modern day Asteroids with physics. Very basic but highly enjoyable gameplay. It's also challenging as well.

Your're a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, right? Play Rodea the Sky Soldier, because it's everything that you described. Think of it as an amalgamation of Sonic and NiGHTS, because the attributes that make those games great are found here as well, which is not surprising, since Rodea was made by Yuji Naka after all.

Simplistic can also be a compliment.

I think it completely depends on context.
