Get Nexus : The Jupiter Incident. Look into Tachyon as well, especially if you like Bruce Campbell.

Look up Freespace 2, it's free. Even though it's getting old, it STILL holds up today as being one of the greatest space sims ever made. The story and gameplay are way beyond stuff like Freelancer....I have a review of it in my profile if you want more detail.

Eve Online. It's not SinglePlayer, only online, but it's is very well done. Great graphics, music, effects, PvP, and the options are seemingly endless. There are over 3000 Solar Systems you can go into, compared to the 40-50 in Freelancer. You can make corporations, have wars, mine asteroids, have squads, chat publicly or between friends, trade for profit, etc. Much of the stuff Freelancer has and more.

However, and I hate leaving this until last, but it requires a monthly payment of $14.95 (first month $19.95). For this reason I don't have the game. But if you want to try it out, you can get a free 14-day trial of Eve Online. It's on their website, which I'm sure can be easly found via Google.

Its still bar none the best space sim to date. Its pure fun. Definitly one of my favorite games of all time. Plus this open source version has improved textures, aa, dynamic lightning and far more resolution modes.

X3: Reunion is a pretty good economy based Space Sim with a lot of depth.

I'm still a big fan of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter as well as the later Wing Commander games. Tachyon, as mentioned, is good fun too.
