Any multiplayer games with a sense of progression?

I'm trying to broaden my search outside the traditional MMORPG into other genres, as long as I can interact/socialize with others and gain items through time it would be good enough for me. Bottom line, game hopping is not my thing and I prefer to stick to fewer games for longer periods.
