50% of the time you don't use your PS3 for gaming, study shows

GameSpot's study shows that the majority of the population of all adult gamers 13 and older who own a PS3 only spend around 50% of their time playing games. Anyone else shocked that a system primarily created and designed for gaming is being used almost primarily for non-gaming?

I watch maybe a movie once a week on my PS3. My wife may use that more than I do since we don't have/need a DVD player so she watches all her movies on it.

But I can safely say that 2-4 hours a week is not 50% of my PS3's use time. More like 10-40%, depending on how busy I am during a particular week.

The other 50% is spent updating and installing said games :lol:

Just kidding, but yeah, I pretty much use my Xbox to watch any movies I have. So much easier just to put them on an external hard drive instead of having to use the disc.

I use my xbox to watch a lot of netflix instant as well as use the Last FM feature... It doesn't mean I dont game on the thing.

For me, I'd say it's more like 66% gaming, 33% streaming movies or tv shows through Netflix, and 1% browsing the Playstation store.

That just confirms the PS3 and probably the Xbox as well are being used more and more as computers. Why are people not just getting PCs?

I barely use my PS3 at all. I think the last time it got any decent use was with Heavy Rain or GoW III. 90% of my gaming is on the 360.

I have lots of digital media and my PS3 is the best tool I have to enjoy them. 50% is quite precisely my usage and I can imagine well that this applies to the average PS3 owner.

I use my 360 90% of the time for Gaming, and the other 10% looking at Arcade games and at what my friends are doing. My PC is my house's multimedia platform.

My daughters and I spend a lot of time gaming on the PS3 (my wife sometimes plays, but not much) but the PS3 is the only blu-ray player in my home and in the past two years or so all the films I've bought have been on blu-ray, so inbetween that and Netflix my PS3 spends also spends quite a bit of time being used for non-gaming purposes.

I use my PS3 just for gaming, so that doesn't apply to me. :P

Neither myself nor my fiancée use the PS3 for gaming anymore (not that I ever really did anyway), to us it's now just an oversized blu-ray player.

I use my PS3 to play games most of the time. I hardly watch movies.

For me it's probably 30% gaming and 70% for movies and music. I game on it when a game like Uncharted comes out. It's the same with my iPod. I use it more for games and web than I do for music.

From your profile it doesn't even look like you own a PS3. Why does this concern you then?

If i broke my PS3's uptime down it would look something like :

80% Netflix

10% BD

10% Games

Yeh i transfer all my movies from my PC to my PS3 and watch em before i go to bed :) Same with my PC though its my main gaming platform but i dont just play games 24/7. I do mindless like go on GS system wars8)

This isn't a surprise..wasn't Sony losing money every time they sold a PS3 at one point because people were using it primarily for the blu-ray player and not buying any games lol? (At the time, blueray players were freakin expensive as hell, better off getting a ps3)

Owned a PS3 since soon after launch, haven't bought a game for it yet.

Why would I be shocked? Sony wanted it to do everything... hehe. I don't mind. I love my PS3. It can play video games, watch blu-ray movies, play online for free, and many other things. And these studies are hardly accurate. How do I know? I'm not included in that study. That's how I know. :P

I've almost never used my system for anything but gaming. I havent touched the photo/video editors, or video/movie players, as i have all those functions, but better, on my two-monitor computer system right next to my tv. The only time i've used the browser is once or twice breifly while my computer internet browser has been unavailable. I see no reason to use my system for non gaming, haven't even used the blu-ray player function.

how do i know this is true where does everyone get these facts?

If anything, that study shows how versatile the system is. Nothing more.
