Make me a list of games with the best graphics that were released in 2001.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Final Fantasy X-PS2
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty-PS2
Dead or Alive 3-Xbox
Gran Turismo 3-PS2
Halo CE-Xbox
For me? Aquanox.
Its developer even made the Aquamark benchmarking tool from it:
I remember getting the game free with my GF4 Ti-4200 a year later.
Xbox:
Rallisport Challenge
GC:
Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
PS2:
Zone of the Enders
Devil May Cry
Onimusha: Warlords
Silent Hill 2
Ico
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
imo these:
PS2 - Gran Turismo 3
GC - Luigi's Mansion
Xbox - Dead or Alive 3
DC - Shenmue 2
N64 - Conker
PC - Aquanox
Severance: Blade of Darkness, the 2001 Dark Souls
- 100% real time shadows (world and characters)
- Real time water reflections
- Basic physics and destructability
- Dismemberment
RyuRanVII
I don't remember being impressed by this game's graphics when I played it, except for some nice lighting/shadows and dismemberments.
Also, your pic is showing a Cel-shaded mod. (the original game was not Cel-shaded)
Soul Reaver 2 looked much better imo.
Jak and Daxter looks far better than that. :?[QUOTE="nameless12345"]
GC - Luigi's Mansion
nintendoboy16
Lighting, shadows and effects are better in Luigi, hence I find it more visually pleasing.
Never were fond of the Jak games.

Luigis Mansion is an underrated game, visually. I don't know what came out in 2001.[QUOTE="nameless12345"][QUOTE="nintendoboy16"]Jak and Daxter looks far better than that. :?

Luigis Mansion is an underrated game, visually. I don't know what came out in 2001.Well, Pikmin was also pretty impressive and RS2 was no slouch either.
GC had some fine-looking games right out of the gate.

Wave Race Blue Storm is solid, too. A component hook up makes a large difference, as well. The water in Wave Race 64 (1996) had me stupefied in amazement. It took a few years before it was even equaled.
Odd request.
From what i've played (in no order):
Black & White (PC)
Starlancer (PC)
Ballistics (PC)
Alien Vs Predator 2 (PC)
IL-2 Sturmovik (PC)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (PC)
Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)
Xbox:
Rallisport Challenge
GC:
Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
PS2:
Zone of the Enders
Devil May Cry
Onimusha: Warlords
Silent Hill 2
Ico
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
SonOfChewbacca
Good list.
PlayStation 2 - Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder/Shattered Skies (Released '01 in Japan), Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Ico, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Zone of the Enders, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. That's all I got. Most of these have been said already though, so... yeah.
. Good list. Â I agree, Â except add Halo. Â It did look amazing at the time.Xbox:

Why so little mention of Shenmue II? The graphics in that game blows almost every other 2001 game (and hell, even most 2002 games) out of the water.

Â
because most haven't played it I guess. shenmue 2(on vga) looks better than many current gen sandbox games like fallout 3 and skyrim

Not sure I would go that far... but the graphics in Shenmue II was definitely a good few years ahead of its time.[QUOTE="Jag85"]

Sorry, but Shenmue II isn't anywhere near the level of Skyrim, graphically.Because Shenmue 1 was the only game that came out with graphcs that it could actually compete with, Shenmue 2 is not impressive. I guess the Xbox version has some dice. Why so little mention of Shenmue II? The graphics in that game blows almost every other 2001 game (and hell, even most 2002 games) out of the water.

if I show anyone skyrim or shenmue 2. they think shenmue 2 looks a lot better (vga)
Â
I'm not talking about technical better because that's bull anyway. what looks the best, is the best

and those don't even look as impressive as shenmue 2 does on vga.

Â
look at this video on 720 p. that's how it looks about on dreamcast in vga
Â
I know vga is 480p, but I think youtube downgrades that video. 720p on your monitor is how it looks pretty much on my hdtv with vga, although a bit worse, because youtube cuts away some of it I think. better than any other game of 2001 by a long shot though
[QUOTE="Heirren"]I thought the first Shenmue looked better than the second.bultje112
Â
what? is this even serious?
Yes. I think the second game suffered a bit from repetitive textures, in ways.Sorry, but Shenmue II isn't anywhere near the level of Skyrim, graphically.[QUOTE="Lost-to-Apathy"][QUOTE="bultje112"]

So you mean artistic graphics, not technical graphics, right? If so, then it's not exactly hard to beat the dull brown-and-grey art design of modern sandbox games like Fallout 3 or Skyrim.[QUOTE="bultje112"][QUOTE="Lost-to-Apathy"] Sorry, but Shenmue II isn't anywhere near the level of Skyrim, graphically. So you mean artistic graphics, not technical graphics, right? If so, then it's not exactly hard to beat the dull brown-and-grey art design of modern sandbox games like Fallout 3 or Skyrim. They go hand in hand. Shenmue was designed much better, visually, than the games you mention. It made really good use of the Dreamcast hardware, to the extent that it didn't push things too far. The game has a very cohesive feel to it because of that, and it also output an incredibly sharp image. Just because a game throws a new technique into the mix doesn't mean it has better graphics. It's the final image that counts. ...In Shenmue 2 is when things were perhaps starting to be pushed a little too far. Entire cities made up of the same cement texture and same wet poo colored brown brick buildings.Uh, what? Here is shenmue2:[QUOTE="StaticOnTV"][QUOTE="Jag85"] I have no idea what you're trying to say... but either way, the graphics of Shenmue II was superior to every other game released in 2001 (Dreamcast version) and 2002 (Xbox version), technically speaking.

[QUOTE="Jag85"][QUOTE="StaticOnTV"] Uh, what? Here is shenmue2:
Now exclusing PC, there are quite a few games better, I may have only played some of the second game, and never the first, but I know what it looks like. Look at: Midtown Madness 3:
Enclave:
Fireblade:
Gun Metal:
That's just a few more technically taxing games. Shemue II looks good, but there not the best imo. Also as for 2001 Dreamcast, it came out in 2002 for the in NA, as for EU, at the end of 2001 near the holiday season so it better look good at the end of 2001 or I would be asking some questions.StaticOnTV

[QUOTE="Jag85"]You said technical graphics, why are you changing things? What are you talking about? My comment to bultje112 above is obviously referring to his comparison to modern sandbox games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim, so what else did you expect me to say? That Shenmue II is technically superior to Skyrim too? Whatever I said before about Shenmue II being technically superior to every other 2001 game still holds true... unless you think Skyrim is a 2001 game?Sorry, but none of those games look as impressive as Shenmue II...
