Think a lot of the games I've enjoyed that are considered retro, have held-up nicely.

Some examples-

  • Little Big Planet
  • Katamari DamashÄ«
  • Worms Armageddon
  • SpeedBall 2
  • Rondo of Blood
  • Ninja Gaiden Black/ Sigma
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Street Fighter III: Third Strike
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Suikoden 2

The only exception is games I truly think evolved what the previous game/ aimed to achieve, example I honestly think Golden Axe as a game outside of blissful nostalgia is irrelevant in a world that now has Dragon's Crown.

Another example is Monster Hunter because of its never ending improvements, it's difficult to recommend Portable 2ndG/3rd when MH4G and the fifth generation game (World/Iceborne) exist. Same I suppose for certain remakes, what's the point grabbing Secret of Monkey Island or Makai Senki Disgaea in its older form? when Special Edition and Refine is both cheaper and an overall improvement? None that's what.

Some sequels/ successors stray too far from being just improvements. Resident Evil never quite got better in every beat, most have a different favorite and prefer some niche instalments. I've even seen some people give praise to Revelations which honestly outside of Raid I think is a pile of shit.

To each his or her own I guess. Quite a lot of games hold up nicely, usually for different reasons. The ones that focused on physics and graphical presentation however died like the trash they are. A good game however, will always be a good game.

Playing modded FF7 on the PC. It's pretty great. Original OST, of course.

I still play Supreme Commander all the time. It's really the best competitive RTS game, easy.

I think Dragon Age: Origins is a great game. I'd play it again too if I hadn't beat it 4 times in every way on hardcore difficulty. The Deeproads were dope. The hardest difficulty really makes you micro-manage. Dragon Age games lost their strategy element after that and thus are crap.

I'd replay almost any old Square RPG any time.

Ninja Gaiden Black holds up great when played on the X1X. 60fps at 4K it looks and feels phenomenal.

They should build another Wing Commander 4. Add an expansion.

Indigo Prophecy went off the rails pretty hard by the third act. I liked the idea of the game, and it was an improvement over Omikron, but QD/David Cage were still refining that formula. Heavy Rain had its narrative issues but it was much better.

Point and click adventure games like Syberia or Dreamfall would be among my last picks to return to, personally.

What qualifies as "old" games? Last gen and earlier? 10 years or more?

Either way, here are my "old" and "older" games I would still play:

  • Deus Ex (original)
  • Crysis....played Crysis quite regularly, I should probably give Warhead another go it's been a while.
  • Any one or more of the Command and Conquer games
  • Thief 2
  • Mass Effect
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?

Two Worlds

Nice to see Two Worlds getting the nod from someone. Game is a diamond in the rough but super fun if you stick with it.

Have you tried Two Worlds 2? It is pretty good as well.

Try http://www.needformadness.com/ It's a great game, albeit short. It used to have a pretty big playerbase and it was really fun to play. But the community is dying and it makes me really sad. Try it and you may just like it.
