There's an alternate layout for smaller resolutions, designed for mobiles - which doesn't support hover drop-downs and the like.
The easiest way to check which view you're in is to zoom in the browser page a significant amount - if the top bar layout changes in the process then it'll change to the mobile view, if it doesn't change then chances are you're already in it, in which case you have to click on the little triangles on the far right side of each button in order to make the drop-downs appear, with a button with a triple bar symbol on it giving access to the bulk of the menu initially. There are a number of known issues with the mobile site in general as well. If it does change then zooming back out or resetting zoom with ctrl+0 should bring you back to to the desktop version of the site.

If you're not in mobile view then try restarting firefox with add-ons disabled (you can do this by selecting restart with add-ons disabled option under help in the main menu, which can be access by pressing the alt button while in firefox if it is hidden) and seeing if it works with all add-ons disabled. If that fixes it then the cause is almost certainly an add-on, just a matter of trial and error to narrow it down in that case.
Does your laptop have a touchscreen installed? While I'm not aware of any GS-specific cases, touchscreens have been known to cause issues (even when just being installed in device manager and not actually in use) with hover in browsers at times, which would cause the symptoms you mention. Setting dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled to 0 in Firefox settings in theory should correct this without uninstalling the touchscreen via device manager, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to help in many cases in practice.

If none of that helps then more details would be useful to try and reproduce this:
Windows 8 or 8.1?
Browser, including version number - you mentioned Mozilla support but Mozilla have several different browsers.
A screenshot may be helpful as there may be less obvious things on the page that point towards the issue, and also to ensure that the symptoms match up entirely when trying to replicate it.
