Locking threads instead of banning trolls

I thought I was having a pretty reasonable debate in the Gina Carano thread, and then two obvious alt/troll accounts show up, start attacking the folks I was debating with, and now it's locked.

This thread wasn't dead, I had to work, and generally can't respond within minutes while I'm working.

Can we do more to just ban troll accounts as they appear, rather than punish everyone by squishing the discussion?
