Fun...but not for long enough.

User Rating: 7.6 | FlatOut PS2
GAMEPLAY: Flatout is an off-road smash em up racing game that can be fun….for a little while. You start out with a pretty slow beat up car, and race against other similar cars, to earn money to upgrade your car, or to get a new ride altogether. The race tracks require you to slide all around, and bump the other cars in order to win. This works ok, but sometimes cornering feels impossible due to the weak braking, and some of the faster cars perform terribly on some of the early tracks. Flatout also includes some minigames which involve hurtling your driver out of the windshield of his car. These games are fun, but can get old in a hurry.

GRAPHICS: The graphics are quite fantastic, and the car models look pretty nice. The environmental effects are basically standard, but the best looking part of Flatout is the car damage. At least they did a good job of making the smashed up cars look awesome, in a game about trashing your car.

SOUND: The car sounds are ok, but there isn’t really anything notable about the sound. Flatout includes a soundtrack, but it wasn’t really anything special.

VALUE: For me Flatout is a rental at best, because it is too short, and it only stays fun for a limited amount of time. The racing stays the same, except that the opponents get tougher, and the cars get faster and seemingly harder to control. If you’re into racing games, then maybe you might consider checking this one out, otherwise you’ll probably want to avoid this one.

TILT: Like I said, Flatout is fun for a while, but after that it’s overly simplistic and routine gameplay will leave you asking for something deeper.
