PSP has often suffered from watered down versions of bigger console games. Not any more!

I first played Flatout on the XBox. It was very enjoyable, tough, and wasn't afraid to be different from other racers.

And now that I've played the PSP version, I can see that this series has reached a new high. It's the most complete racing game so far on the PSP.

The tracks are fantastic and very long, covered with destructable objects right way around. I was shocked to see how much detail was crammed in to each one as fences go flying, A.I. cars race through haystacks which hurtle into your car before it spins off into a tree and sends your driver out the windscreen! Even if the A.I. goes out of sight ahead of you, as you catch up you can see that the A.I. has been through the area because you'll see the mess left behind. And every mess made will still be visible, and retained on every lap.

Sounds obvious, but that's the kind of detail missing from a lot of games.

Lots of modes - the career flatout mode where you race for cash, enter destruction derby's, the Carnage mode where you race predefined scenarios, and the stunts which are always good for a laugh.

This game wipes the floor with the Burnout series on the PSP - it handles better, offers all the destruction, and turns the tracks into something that really effects the gameplay, not just a road to skid about on.

Flatout always seems to have had that underdog low budget feel to it - without the backing of EA like Burnout has, it can slip under the radar and not get the review status it deserves.

I say try it and see for yourself - your PSP will thank you for it.
