To be honest, I didn't quite know what to make of Fish Tycoon when I stumbled across it during a search for a good freeware game. The trial was free anyhow, so I decided to give it a try, and within the first 30 mins I was hooked.

This is by far the best "pet" simulator game I have ever had the benifit of trying (and I'm a fan of that type of thing). Like most pet sims, the game continues to progress while its not running, and Fish Tycoon does it at a very carefully designed pace. Previous experience with this genre made me think that the fishtank would be on fire or something crazy if I left the game to sleep for eight hours, or, God forbid, if I left the computer and went to work. Not so with Fish Tycoon. The fish get hungry, but they do not die of old age, and you can even stop the game clock in the options menu (an option very few pet sims have an equivalent of).

Aside from the relaxing flow of the game-time, the Pokemon-esque "gotta catch 'em all" adictiveness of this game is overpowering (just to clarify, that was simply an analogy...this game is NOTHING like Pokemon...). There are literally over four hundred fish breeds possible, and from experience, playing it conservitively, you might only unlock around 5-10 a day, since you also have to worry about finances and managing your own personal fish shop (hence the "Tycoon" part of the title).

The graphics are simple, but that is par for the course for this genre, and for a downloadable game. The sound is equally simple, but since the game is mostly played in 10-15 min "coffee break" spurts, it is charming enough.

Overall, this is one of the best suprises I have forund on the internet in a long time. You'd be cheating yourself to not try it, and you'd be cheating the brilliant developers to not buy it.
