It is with good reason that Firewatch has become known as a staple among the emerging genre of walking-simulators. After playing many great games in this genre I can easily say that this one is definitely that most immersive. The main reason behind the immersion comes down to player choice. You have an important role in choosing how the narrative unfolds based on what you choose to share with your companion. Also you are free to proceed to your different objectives using any route and pace you wish. It is so easy to lose yourself in this beautiful world, especially with it's captivating story-line. Lets take a deeper look into everything that makes this experience so special.

You play as Henry, a man who will be defined by your choices. Right from the beginning of the game you read the story of how Henry meant his wife Julia. Henry is has been slowly losing her to a serious disease. Seemingly needing a break from the stressful circumstances you take a summer job at a national forest to keep a lookout for wildfires and fire threats. Upon your arrival you meet Delilah, another lookout whom you quickly get to know over conversations on your radio. Together you'll investigate everything from a couple reckless teens to more bizarre happenings. It then is no surprise that you two bond fast seeing as she is the only person you are in communication with.

Although this game features a fairly linear story there is a tremendous amount of player choice. As you converse with Delilah there will be breaks in the conversation where you will get the chance to choose how and if you'll reply back. Also, as you explore the forest many places and objects present talking points but it is up to you if it is worth calling Delilah to discuss or not. A lot of choice also goes into how you proceed from one objective to the next. You have in your possession a map and compass to help guide you between different locations. Routes aren't always obvious and there is nothing stopping you from exploring off the beaten path.

You'll most likely be tempted to explore and meander around this scenic landscape. Although this may not be the most graphically detailed game it is beautiful none the less. Everything from the different walking paths, streams, lakes, and groves all blend into a very naturally crafted environment. As you explore different music will fade in and out designed to fit the current mood of the unfolding narrative. Everything comes together in a way that just pulls you in until you're completely engrossed.

This is a great game to get lost in. The story is compelling both from your involvement and the different mysteries you have to investigate. Visually vibrant and very colorful, the landscapes encourage you to explore. This isn't a particularly long game but it definitely promotes multiple breakthroughs. Not only is there a lot to see but each play through will encourage you to try different dialog options. This may not be for good choice for gamers who prefer action but if you want a relaxing experience Firewatch is a great world to escape to.
