Not the best version of Final Fantasy I

User Rating: 6 | Final Fantasy PSP
After playing through the main quest and through a couple of the bonus dungeons I feel a bit disappointed in this version of Final Fantasy I. Since the game has already been released in several instances I was hoping that Square Enix would go all out in expanding and improving this release. In reality they essentially ported the GBA version, added the music and opening cutscene from the Playstation version, and added the minimum of extra content and graphical updates that could be expected for a major release.

On the surface this seems like the same old final fantasy you may have know many years ago but many gameplay tweaks had been made, some good, some not so good, and some bad.

The good:
You are given a run button. Monks are able to wear the Ribbon without a decrease in defense stats. The thief is a bit more powerful. Bosses have been given a lot more hit points. Tents restore both magic and hit points, not just hit points. Intelligence affects spells more. Can go all the way to level 99.

The not so good:
The magic system has been changed to a magic point system from spell charges (This is not so good because you end up using the same spells over and over again when before you had to decide when it was worth using your spell charges for your best spells.) Ethers are in the game (restore magic points),. Golden needles and the Life spell can be used in combat.

The bad: Items and weapons are cheaper. The number of experience points needed to increase levels has been greatly reduced. (For example 85,000 exp. points will get you to level 30 in this games but only level 19 in the original.)

What all of these changes all have in common is that they all make the game easier. Now making the game a bit easier would have been fine and was needed. Too much was done and the game gets downright boring after a while to the point that the bosses are the only enemies that can take more than one hit. If only the experience point system was kept the same, the rest of the changes would be welcome. What should have been done instead of decreasing the experience requirements is add bonus side quests where the game is known to ramp up quickly in difficulty. As it is, if you choose to do the bonus dungeons you ruin the main quest by over-leveling your characters and taking away all the challenge. I suggest going with Final Fantasy Origins over this because in that version you have the choice as to which changes you want implemented in the game.
