The battle system is interesting at first, but eventually it just sucks.

The battle system is run on gambits--actions you can set that are automatically performed when you run into an enemy.
The problem is that even when you have the maximum number of gambits (and thus have the most specific system for dealing with different types of enemy) you still have to change your gambits for almost every enemy. My judgement in any given situation is just too complicated to be predetermined by a dozen or so gambits--and I'd imagine that I'm not the only one.
You end up having to pause in the middle of just about every battle to change a gambit--then changing it back, sometimes multiple times in a single battle. It gets really old after a little bit.

Besides, the story isn't even memorable--I beat it, and still don't remember the most basic elements of the story.

I am an avid fan of the Final Fantasy series--I have beaten all the series from I to X plus some, and I found this game thoroughly disappointing.
