If you're looking for a classic example of great design in RPGs, look no further than this title.
Three months later, I was still playing it religously.
This game is a perfect example of what games should be. Immersive storyline, easy control scheme, incredible depth in character customization, great music/sound effects, and great graphics, even by today's standards. I still don't know how Squaresoft packed a 40+ hour game into one SNES cartridge, but I'm very, VERY happy they did. This was a revolutionary title at it's time, and still arguably one of the best FF games ever.
If you get the chance to pick up this gem, do so. You might find yourself playing it right along with your shiny new 360/PS3/Revolution games.
