An absurdly fun game ruined by the fact that EA can't program an AI to save their lives.

User Rating: 7.5 | FIFA 12 (PS3 Bundle) PS3
I have never seen more retarded AI in my life. I thought that NCAA football had bad AI, but holy CRAP does EA take the freaking cake with FIFA 12. If I could count high enough, I may be able to quantify the amount of blown markings and horrible lines my defenders have made in a half a season of manager mode, but it's impossible to keep track of them all.

Basically, the new defensive system is "stand there and watch, while waiting for you to do something." The only issue with that is that the computer can stop on a dime and has FLAWLESS ball control, whereas with a controller and with your players, you do not. Tackles will constantly bounce from your player's feet to the opponents, and the horribly inaccurate passing controls and change in the "power meter's" speed make getting used to this game all the more jarring than in previous outings, as you'll often find your player passing directly into a line of another player.

Annoyingly, the defensive woes lie SOLELY on the user side. CPU defenders are brilliant. They are always in line to make offsides frequent, and they converge in threes surrounding your players (who refuse to move forward to support the guy with the ball). It's absolutely impossible to play soccer as it's supposed to be played because the CPU players never make a mistake and will always overpower your players for the ball. You CANNOT win any moves or dribbles against defenders. It will not happen. Ever.

The good news is that you can change back to the old defensive system, which you'd think would be great, but unfortunately the new defensive line-up and marking system fails miserably. As opposed to pressuring with a guy from upfield, your defenders will BREAK LINE to attack the player and ALWAYS miss horribly if you're not controlling them. The Jockeying system is nice, but unfortunately the computer is absolutely flawless in its use of skill moves and changes of direction. So you have to be perfect, or you're toast.

Ultimately, it comes down to the user AI being so horribly bad that you cannot dream to win unless you are capable of doing anything yourself, that is unless you drop the difficulty down one notch to "semi-pro" where it's so piss easy that you can literally walk by defenders and they won't move. Great options, EA.

But possibly the most annoying part of the defensive woes is that your line will NEVER be a line and NEVER catch the offense offsides. Ever. You always have one guy at the complete other side of the play running WAY back and giving the offense a straight line to the goal. Not to mention goalkeepers are mentally retarded in this version of the game (requiring you to ALWAYS be the judge of when he charges out, which would be nice if he knew what an angle was.)

All this said, you'd think that I would hate FIFA. Quite the contrary. All of EA's ineptitude in AI aside, the game is very fun, and thrilling WHEN IT WORKS. You'll get games every so often where the AI actually plays well, which is always a surprise. However, the CPU AI is always flawless, which makes beating them all the more satisfying.

Basically, unless you're an absolute whizz at soccer and sports games, don't play past semi-pro because it's amazing how bad your teammates will be. It's fun, but holy crap is it frustrating to watch your entire team play like retards... I warned you.
