solid shooter, but not particularly inspired

User Rating: 8 | Far Cry 5 PC

FC5, the 5th game in the Far Cry franchise, is a solid shooter that delivers on most of its promises. The system in which you acquire quests is more 'organic', which was a refreshing and effective change from the usual hackneyed "go here, collect this, unlock this, come back". The map itself is also very rewarding, and you have a variety of fun vehicles to unlock and utilize and/or abuse depending on your fighting style.

The storyline is also something that is effective at quickly grabbing your attention. FC5 starts strong and continues fantastically through its first arc. Towards the middle, however, it starts to run flat, and the ending is a downright letdown. It is this lack of momentum and inability to finish gracefully that ultimately makes FC5 an '8' game, instead of a '9' like FC3, which was able to for the most part carry itself until the very end. FC4 was somewhat of a FC3 clone, but it was at least very fun to play, especially the arena, with regards to end game content.

FC5 kind of loses its 'point' towards the end, and despite the fact that the game tried to create a novel atmosphere, it starts to become ironically repetitive towards the end. I won't spoil it but the method in which is storyline advances becomes frustratingly predictable. It doesn't help either that 'take downs' and weapons in general feel much less gratifying than they used to be. Whereas in the earlier games you could chain take downs, this game emphasizes a lot on stealth, which is fine except that it doesn't really match the rest of FC's hectic gameplay.

By no means is FC5 a bad game. It has a solid foundation is overall a good game that is fun to play. It's biggest problem is that it was incredibly hyped up and had to stand in its predecessors' shadow. All in all, not bad, but one can't help but nitpick the game's ambition and failure to realize.
