Fallout 2 might seem like a boring, old, broken game to most of today's gamers, but it certainly isn't. If you have any respect for gaming classics, then you should play this game without hesitation. This is the wasteland, you can be anyone you want to be out here - from a nice and caring "hero"... to an evil, twisted and psychopathic maniac. Fallout 2 allows you to pretty much play as anyone you want to.
Let's start off with the character creation. This part of the game may seem a bit boring to action lovers, but RPG fans will certainly love it. While there is no customization in your character's looks but there is a lot of choice in assigning your skills and abilities. You also, of course, get to choose the sex of your character. Which one you choose and how you assign your abilities will have an enormous effect on your gameplay. So make sure you create the type of character that will suit your style and not be a total wimp in combat. Just remember that sneak/security skills are important too so try to be balanced, otherwise you'll get killed by the first raider you meet.
After you have made your character, you will start off in the small village of Arroyo, formed by the magnificent Vault Dweller. As for the story, people who haven't played the first Fallout will have to fill in a few blanks at the start using sources like Wikipedia or something, because you won't know what's going on and who you are playing as. That's because you'll be playing as the descendant of the Vault Dweller... does that name ring a bell? If no, then you will have to go back and play the first Fallout. Being the descendant of the guy or girl who formed this village, you are spoken as the Chosen One and you are to embark on a long quest to find a GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) which is supposed to be able to make the wasteland a habitable place again.
After you will finish the "test" inside a cave, you will be given a Vault Suit and a Pip-Boy (like in any other Fallout game). You will also have to leave the village and find the "holy" GECK. This is were the real game starts. From here you will be able to find hundreds of weapons, choose between hundreds of armours to wear, complete countless side-quests, explore the incredibly large world of Fallout and even earn yourself a reputation - whether you will become a slaver, caravan guard, work for the Brotherhood of Steel or even work as a porn star. And you will have to worry about the difficulty at first, because it will be hard to find ammo, defeat superior enemies and other stuff. But, further in the game it should get quite easy, as long as you know how to earn easy money, steal stuff, complete missions, sell slaves or just help people to get paid.
Fallout 2 will probably never be respected as much as it was once because gaming has become extremely action-packed and with FO2's slow and turn-based combat, many people won't like it. But it is actually a good thing, because it's easy to master and doesn't require great reflexes - even if tedious and boring at times. There are hundreds or maybe even thousands of choices to be made in Fallout 2 and the fate of many will depend upon your actions. If you like Role-Playing Games, this is the game for you. If you liked the first Fallout, this is the game for you. If you played Fallout 3 and want to know more about the Wasteland, then this might not be the game for you as it is much different to Bethesda's FO3. Fallout 2 is a great game which will always be remembered as a classic and first choice for RPG lovers.
