I picked this little beauty up as part of a "buy two get one free" deal in the used bin, and couldn't have made a smarter choice. I at first was expecting merely nostalgia from the purchase (I remember playing the original F-Zero when it was first released on SNES) but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed playing.

The graphics are classic F-Zero, making use of the patented "Mode 7" style from the SNES. The movement is fluid and conveys a sense of speed (especially when you hit the turbo) with enough subtle variation in the colors and patterns of the background to keep all courses from looking alike. You'll be in a for an especially vivid treat if you have a DS lite to play this on, where it looks great.

The sound is adequate, my favorite moment being hitting the turbo; the sound cue for this action is spot on. While not anything I'd rush out to get on CD, the background music didn't make me want to jab my eyes out either. One of the more notable game mechanics is the "blast turn", which has the player tap the accelerator repeatedly while turning to increase traction and turning radius. This adds to the excitement and involvement of racing, rather than simply letting up on the accelerator on turns and provides for some opportunities to shave essential seconds off of laps through tighter steering.

All in all, this game is a great bargain with high replay value; it is especially as steal if it can be found used. It manages to keep up with the more slick racers of recent years through a spot on difficulty and a perfect level of excitement. Highly recomended.
