User Rating: 9.6 | F-Zero GX GC
In the future, everybody wears spandex. Sega and Amu****t Vision may have done more justice to the F-Zero license than Nintendo ever had. F-Zero GX is the most fleshed out installment of the series. The characters all have a story, their own music (this game needs a soundtrack CD) and their own personality. The Story Mode is really the first chance to see Falcon in action. The cutscenes are corny but in that superhero-ish good way. The missions are tough but never impossible and your efforts are never in vain - the more you play, the more closer to the finish you get and then there's that incredible feeling of finally winning a mission. But the Story mode is not the main mode of play. Grand Prix has you racing against 30 other racers on an assortment of tracks. The AI is great here; you'll see racers fighting each other as well as you and as you turn the class difficulty up, the AI plays more agressively. Futhermore, the tracks themselves get challenging fast. It's a difficult task surviving the Diamond Cup tracks, let alone win them. Learning the tracks is important but like Story Mode, your efforts are never for nothing. The more you race, the closer to victory you get and thus you keep motivated. There's 30 different racers. (You start with 4 but you can buy more with money earned in Grand Prix and Story Mode) They're a diverse bunch and all handle differently. Using different rides require different stradegies. Black Bull is harder to steer and requires you to drift into turns but as a bigger car you can afford to knock out some other racers whereas Red Gazelle is a smaller, more fragile vehicle but can zip along the course. The game controls well. Outside of your typical acceleration and brakes, you have L and R to help lean into turns, and pressing both at once lets you drift into turns. What means of handling turns you take depends on the racer itself. You can also boost - at the cost of some energy. There's another crucial element to the gameplay - learning when on the courses to boost and whether or not to boost in the first place. (It's not like you want to blow up so you have to boost in moderation) You can also use a ramming attack or a spinning attack to damage oppenents. Its fairly easy to take out other rides in Grand Prix though getting caught up in fighting can cost you the race so be careful. All and all F-Zero GX is an awesome game that's highly recommended to anyone up for the challenge.
