The more you play it, the more you love it. Like a fine wine, it gets better with age and playing with it in the dark. The learning curve is insanely steep, but the rewards are well worth the pain. Now that the 5.1 patch has been released, one doesn't have to wait forever for the game to save/load, which was my main beef with the vanilla version. I still wish the the armies weren't represented by sprites but by actual armies centered around a general/marshal, a la Knights of Honor: this would allow one to see cavalry and artillery sprites, contributing to a greater visual richness. I also wish that the later versions had seasonality and weather. But hey, maybe in some future game.
Now, if only Paradox would come out with an equivalent game set around the world covering the time period from the Greek-Persian wars to the barbarian invasions of the Roman Empire, I'd be in heaven...
