The universe is a yawning chasm...

Eternal Darkess was supposed to be released on the nintendo 64, but came out eventually on the cube. This game shows that it pays to put time and effort into the production of a videogame. The learnng curve is great, the story original and exciting and the graphics especially the shadows and lighting are fantastic.
You play as Alex Roivas, a young female whose grandfather is brutally slaughtered. You go and investigate his mansion. Ofcourse when i say mansion you immediately think of Resident Evil. This mansion however serves as an overworld or frame tale to access the various levels that take place at different times and locations in history with different playable characters.
All the stories are centered around this book called "the tome of darkness" which enables the player to cast magic spells and which somehow has to do with the death of dear grandpapa. You can also use conventional weapons like swords and clubs to defend yourself from the monsters in this game.
The game also features a sanitymeter. When this drops strange things start to happen. This is a lot of fun! At one point i discovered that the meter starts filling itself up by moving around. Once i discovered this i had no problems keeping the meter full. Though the idea of having to move around to keep your sanity is nice, it was more fun when the meter was getting low from time to time.
This game is much more intelligent then Resident Evil and scary in a different way. Great game!
