I have a unique perspective on EDF 2017. I actually bought the game on it's release in 2007. After I bought the game, however, I had serious second thoughts about the purchase I just made. Fearing this game would suck, I returned the game unopened and bought something else.
It wasn't until recently that I took a second look at EDF 2017, with a sequel on the way and the price drop. Even after I bought the game again, I bought it with another game, and still didn't expect much. I thought I would probably play it for a couple days, and then grow bored of it.
Two weeks later, this game is all I play right now. I'm totally hooked, and I'm blown away how a game of this sort is this outstanding.
If you are someone who is looking for great graphics, great story, innovative gameplay, this is not your game. I usually fall into this catagory, but for some reason, none of those shortcomings bother me at all. That's because you do one thing and one thing only in EDF 2017: KILL EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!
GRAPHICS: While the graphics certainly don't measure up to the best on the 360, they are very smooth and defined. In fact, the overall style of the graphics add to what makes this game different and special. And what really had me sold from the moment I popped the game in is the incredible sense of scale. I had what I call a "gaming moment" on the first level. As I turned the corner with my fellow troops, I could see in the distance a huge black ant coming over the top of a skyscraper. In all my years of gaming, I had never seen something like that! Huge, towing robots walk the streets. Massive space ships float above the city. And of course, BUGS!!
So at the end of the day, I believe the graphics are actually really good, and a big reason why the game is enjoyable.
SOUND: I am very impressed with the soundtrack. Very good. Not so much with guns and enemy sounds.
GAMEPLAY: This is where the game hooks you. Because you are constantly gaining new weapons and more health points, it's almost like a loot game, such as Borderlands. And as you get stronger and get stronger weapons, you can take on harder difficulties. Shooting everything is a lot of fun, especially since the game can throw 30 to 40 enemies at you at once.
PRESENTATION: Supurb. Like a B-Movie on the Syfy channel, everything is done in a cheesy, corny way. But that's a good thing.
In total, EDF 2017 is an instant classic. I can't give it a 10 because it does have technical issues. Namely, dead enemies don't disappear right away and can get in the way. Still, do yourself a favor and at least try this game. I almost missed out on one of the funnest games I have ever played.
