All of the "Xtreme Legends" that Koei crank out are usually quite rubbish... does this one make any difference to the tr

Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends is a add on "expansion" to DW5 but can be played as a standalone. As usual I recommend to not play this as a standalone, as it isn't great by itself. However this doesn't mean the game is bad straight away, read on.

As you know, Dynasty Warriors (I'll refer it as "DW" now) is the popular hack and slash by Koei/Omega Force. The gameplay in it's core, has not really changed much as you still are going around slashing people up, but this time we have more variety on how you do the "hack-n-slash" business.

We have the usual Xtreme Mode, which is like the fighter's 'survival' mode, but like usual, you can take over territories and earn ally's, which basically means a watered-down version of popular "DW Empires". However, this will prove to be exciting for veterans of the DW series, as it does get very hard at times, and while the game does this cheaply (freeze player, fire player, freeze player) you do feel the excitement at times, but still remains to be a mode that can be improved.

The all-new mode is called Destiny Mode, which lets you play as a poor solider to a high ranking Lieutenant General, as you go through China through the kingdom you picked (NO OTHERS!!...) . This mode has a lot of potential right from the start, and while it remains basic at the moment, it can be improved. You have tactics on your disposal here (very basic too..) such as set fire to a base, ambush etc. Through out this mode, you'll be offered promotions, defecting offers, and how you will progess your character. While very exciting through 1st and 2nd play, you soon realise that it's not all the "hype" from Koei and that is actually made quite simple and that in the sense in "battle" is lost here as you have small battles of 3 small units against 3 other small units.

The "Legend" Mode is basically like a director's cut of a film, it's stages that were not previously added on the original DW5. Some of these quite fun, and some of these are about as fun as a trip to school. The graphics stay the same and so does the gameplay (big shock) but in the sound department we see the "best of" DW3 and DW4 soundtrack, which is cool but only plays at Xtreme Mode.

Overall if you have DW5 and you are a Dynasty Warriors fan then get it, as you'll probably love the features here. If you haven't got DW5 and thinking about XL... BIG NO. You'll probably give this back within a couple of days. It's a good package but can be improved on heavily.
