Dune is a game based on the Frank Herbert novel of the same name. It's sequel, Dune II was a incredible success as heralded the arrival of the RTS. This game shares little in common with its successor besides its name. You begin the game as Paul Atredes, the son of a Duke who has been sent to Arrikis, better known as Dune. A desolate planet where there has never been one drop of rain that is the one and only source of the spice Melange in the universe. The spice is life; he who controls the spice controls the universe! As Paul, you try to form a relationship with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the planet. Later you find yourself destined to become the Kwizarta Haderach, the legendary messiah of the Fremen. You lead a holy war against the Harkonen, a ruthless race of people who share Dune with the Atrades and the ones responsible for the of your father. Arise Paul and become the savior of your new people or die on the planet! Graphics are decent for the day but nothing to get overly excited about, even for its time at 256 color VGA. Sound composes mostly FM music and an occasional sound effect. There was a CD-ROM version that was later released with speech that enhanced the experience significantly. The overall gamely really boils down to finding and visiting caves called seitches where you have stationed the Fremen who have decided to follow you. Initially you can only communicate with them in person but eventually you can contact them at a distance as you powers grow. You will need to tell your troops to either mine spice, train for battle, or change the ecology of the planet to turn Dune into a paradise. All in all, this is a solid game that really was good because it was trying to do things with strategy games that were not done before.
