Made what we know as good RTS games.

User Rating: 9.5 | Dune: The Battle for Arrakis GEN
I don't know if this could be considered the first RTS game because there are a few games before it that also were so close to being considered the first Real Time Strategy (Romance of the Three Kingdoms; Dune CD, etc). It is the most elaborate of the games in that you get to build a more in dept base and it seems closer to the RTS that we are use to. Basically a Command and Conquer without the graphics.
Being that I had only seen this game in the past and hadn't been able to play it until this year when I found a copy. The graphics are pretty good in that you can tell what character you are clicking on unlike any of the games prior. The AI is very clever in that they seem similar to the AI of games from the late 90's RTS or even early 2000s and less like a well outdated Artificial Intelligence. So many of the aspects we are use to in games are there such as you can't build to far from base; you need to harvest resources; many different units such as people and trucks; elements that are not enemies but still distroy your stuff like other games have (earthworms in Dune eat your vehicles, Red Alert had a rip in space time); fog of war and power plants. Warcraft and C&C would all these elements later.
There are a few issues with this game that people probably noticed were bugged by even back in the 90's though they had never played this genre before. The biggest is that you have to move every unit one at a time (maybe a different systems version didn't have this issue) but it makes attacking an enemy annoying; the harvester harvest crazy slow; theres nothing you can't drive on so no natural barriers too keep enemies out and the AI is a little to smart at times and gangs up on you which makes some levels almost impossible. I played one level and never finished because they both constantly attacked me and I never could catch up.
Overall: the gameplay sparked a whole new genre of video games; the music is actually quite good; lots of upgrades for units; quite good graphics for 93; seems like back in the day it had good replay value.
If you like Real Time strategy games; enjoy Red Alert and the like; or anything Westwood makes I recommend this game. I don't recommend it if you want to play a Dune game because it seems closer to Red Alert than it does Dune.
