It's time to kick some ass and chew bubblegum... and I'm all out of bubblegum!

User Rating: 7.5 | Duke Nukem Advance GBA
Duke Nukem is one of the most awesome characters in video game history - his incredible ability to always overcome the odds, constantly defeating alien scum while saving all of the attractive females in the world makes him an iconic figure in the gaming universe. Though one might not think his style of FPS-gameplay introduced in the classic Duke Nukem 3D would work all too well on the Game Boy Advance, 2002's Duke Nukem Advance shows that it can indeed work on a handheld. This is not a flawless game by any stretch, but it's a fun shooter for any GBA owner.

In terms of story, Duke Nukem Advance is exactly what you'd expect from a game in this series - aliens are taking over the planet, and it's up to you to save the babes before they destroy Earth! Or... something like that. The story doesn't matter. What DOES matter is the amount of juvenile sex jokes, badass one-liners, and addictive gameplay that makes Duke Nukem so great is smoothly transitioned onto the GBA.

The 19 levels created exclusively for Duke Nukem Advance are all well-designed, and the variation between the different environments and level layouts keeps the game entertaining while it lasts - which, unfortunately, isn't for very long. This game can easily be beaten in around four hours, and although it's quite challenging at times, it's not a game that will provide you with endless hours of entertainment. The controls also feel a bit limited on the GBA button layout, but the developers clearly did the best they could with what they were given - a single D-pad just is not ideal for most FPS gamers, myself included.

These flaws aside, Duke Nukem Advance is easily one of the best shooters available on the GBA. The levels are well-designed, the dialogue is humorous, and the graphics look excellent (if a bit pixelated). This is a fun, old school-styled first person shooter, and if you enjoy games like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, or Wolfenstein, this is definitely a good game to take on the go. I found a brand new, boxed copy of this game for only $6, so you won't have to pay an arm and a leg to find Duke Nukem Advance, either. If you own a GBA and like first person shooters, definitely pick this one up.
