Much better than the first game but still room for improvement.

User Rating: 8.8 | Drakengard 2 PS2
I got a copy of Drakengard 2 soon after it released in Feb 2006. After playing for some times, I decided to stop playing Drakengard 2 and completed Drakengard first before I continue. My decision is right because I got a clearer picture on the story of this game and after 100+ hours of playing, I finally completely max out everything in Drakengard 2 and viewed all the 3 endings. So I decided to write a review on this game to help people to know about this game.

Drakengard 2 is designed by Square Enix and released 2 years after the first Drakengard game in 2004. The first one is a fair game but Drakengard 2 has succeeded to improve a lot in all aspects from the first one.

You play as a teenage who was raised by a dragon. The main character is using sword as his weapon. Later he met 3 other playable characters joined his parties against the evil: a lady using magic staff, a lady using spear & a guy using axe. Each of them has a number of weapons to unlock during the game. You can switch to any of the playable characters anytime in the game after the first play through. Each weapon has its unique combo attack as well as magic attack. Each weapon can level up to maximum level 4 to fully unlock its potential.

You character can visit many village shops to buy weapons, healing items & accessories to equip before heading for the battle. The battle normally divided into 2 types of mission: on the ground & in the air. On the ground, you can use any of the 4 characters to cut through hundreds of enemies. If it is an open space, you can even call the dragon and blaze on the enemies from above. In the air, you ride on your dragon to attack enemies’ air-ship, plane, monster & dragon. The dragon also has many different types of overdrive on the ground and in the air.

The game has four difficulties level, easy, normal, hard & extreme. You can select to play on easy or normal on your first play through. The second play through will automatically set on Hard, and after that all will be on Extreme mode. The game has 3 endings to unlock, first on easy or normal, second on hard & third on extreme. You can carry forward all your gold, items, weapon & level every time you load a new game from your previous save file.

The story of the game is quite straight forward, not much twists. The storyline is continued from the first game, its time set at 18 years after the first game. You will meet the main character and his dragon from the first game. You will also meet some other characters from the first game. Overall the story is acceptable but not outstanding.

Drakengard 2 graphic is well presented and the detail on characters, weapons & magic attack are all well done. Its music is also great especially it has a very nice theme song. I have no major complaint on the graphic and sounds except the voice acting. The voice acting for the main character is poorly done. I really hate his voice everytime he talks.

As conclusion, Drakengard 2 is a game which has its unique gameplay, moderate storyline, good graphic and sounds. If you like the first one, you must not miss the second. If you like weapon collecting or slashing hundred & thousand of enemies, then this game is good for you. If you never play Drakengard before, then I suggest you can rent it first and try for yourself. This game is definitely worth for a play.
