I don't know where Gamespot gets off in ridiculing games like this as "stone-age" and worn-out, yet flips over every big budget FPS game as if it's reinventing the wheel. The adventure genre does not deserve ridicule because it dares to slow the pace and challenge your mind. It is not anymore tired of a genre than most any other genre.

5/10 is ridiculously harsh for this game. I was very pleasantly surprised by not only the well researched, deep story line but also the sheer challenge and variety of the puzzles. Two things that are rare in the genre these days. It was also nice and creepy at times, but never going overboard. Just when you think it isn't that kind of game, something happens that gives you the chills like something is just around the corner. Nice subtlety. This game is not a bargain bin adventure game, a lot of good effort went into it.

The story actually incorporates real history of Vlad the Impaler, yet ties in Bram Stoker's famous story, the Bible and many other legends together in a very cool way. It's not a simplified, cartoonish form of dracula.

That said, it's not perfect. The graphics aren't bad at all, but the animation lags at times. The characters pause and go into pre-animated routines (like looking around, smoking a cigarette) at very awkward times and it suspends belief in an otherwise well-written, well performed dialogue. Some of the puzzles, especially near the end, were excessively hard too. I'd be very impressed if somebody could complete this without using a walkthrough at any point. Once you get what the puzzle is going for, it kinda makes sense, but there is a lot of information you have to sort out and read through to get there, and a lot of leaps you need to take. To me, that's much better than an adventure game that is too logical and too easy though. I enjoy getting stumped by a challenge and then getting over it. Otherwise, what's the point of a "game"?

I was very engaged in the game, sometimes playing late into the night because I couldn't quit. That's the sign of a good game in my opinion. Don't listen to the jaded, mainstream focused Gamespot reviewers.
