Double Dragon is a very short, yet fun fighting game that was important for the development of future beat’em ups.
The game consists of four levels filled with enemies. You are able to perform some different kinds of kicks and punches, and other moves like some kind of a hold where you repeatedly hit your enemy with your knee or decide to throw them down. In addition you can take off certain things off the ground (like boxes or dynamite) to hit your enemy with it.
Game-play here is pretty good. It’s easy to learn and the game is pretty fast-paced.
There aren’t many different types of enemies you’ll encounter, but it’s always fun to knock them out, especially when you use your surroundings (like broken bridges) to get them out of your way.
It isn’t a difficult game, though some of the enemies can be hard to beat sometimes. Overall the difficulty feels a little bit too easy once you know how to handle your foes.
You will find some nice backgrounds and the overall graphics are some of the better ones you can find on the SMS. There are some nice details you can find here and there.
If there’s a problem with the graphics it’s the flickering. There can be a lot of flickering at times, especially when there’s some action on the screen.
The music and the sound effects are both rather poorly: While the music gets boring very fast (although they fit the situations well most of the time), the sounds are just awful. They just doesn’t sound right.
A really big drawback of this game is its length. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the game. Of course it can be fun to play through it multiple times with a friend, but even that becomes boring after some time.
None the less, Double Dragon is a fun game that was vital in the evolution of beat’em ups.
