Doom for the Xbox Live Arcade is the exact same game that was released back in 1993, with sharper graphics. Of course this is not a bad thing. In fact, that is the best reason to pick this game up. It brings us back to a time when games were all about great gameplay and less about the gimmicky "innovations" that plague modern first person shooters. This game is only for the hardcore. Without this game, many recent shooters would probably not exist (or maybe FPS would not exist altogether). Doom is the first FPS that attracted attention, not only because it was amazing and fun, but because of it's demonic, satanic and occult imagery that freaked out parents, politicians and religious leaders. Doom is a great example of how to be revolutionary. The setting is basic but very creepy. You are a lone space marine who battles Demons on the two moons of Mars as well as Hell itself. The graphics may be dated, but is proof that graphics do not make a game, gameplay does. The music and audio is memorable (although the Playstation One port of Doom had superior music). I have all the tunes stuck in my head forever thanks to my countless hours of playtime with Doom. The level designs are memorable and classic too. The moon base levels really do feel disturbing and silent. It is as if you get a creepy feeling, that whatever these UAC scientists were up to, must have not been pretty. The hell maps are insane. You will see bodies hanging from the ceiling, dead or alive writhing in pain. The red taint that these maps have will creep you out and give you a taste of how hell MAY be like. The monster designs are awesome. A few demon designs (Pinky Demon and Baron of Hell)are based on the christian bible's interpretation of Satan: horned and cloven hooved beasts. Other demons look like naked brown men with spikes (Imp), flaming horned skulls (Lost Soul), strawberries (Cacodemon) and more. The controls are easy to learn as well, but that does not make the game easy if that is what you are hoping for. This is a hardcore game with high difficulty (unless you play on "I'm too young to die." or "Hey, not too rough."). If you are a true gamer, I suggest you pick up this legendary classic. If you don't than it is just because you are not a gamer.
