Doom Review (yep another one)

User Rating: 9.7 | DOOM PC
Doom is a revolutionary game, I guess everyone knows that. I remember the first time I played Wolfestein 3D I thought it was great, then few years later I hear about Doom. However since I have no PC I never had the change to play it if my friend (back then the only one I know that have PC) didn't get the game. I waited and waited till the Snes version came out. Alright I bought it just to realize that it's just average game (of course over rated by some Doom fans). A year later the friend of mine got the game. It just took one minute of game, and I realized how unfair was the Snes version. The graphics of doom was great, but I was more impressed with the design of every corner of a level. No completely squared rooms like Wolf 3D, in fact every level has several floors. Back to the graphics I can't say anything bad about it (nowadays people just rip old games comparing them with the new ones), the light effects was perfect, but what bother me was the dark atmosphere since I hardly see the monsters. About the sound was perfect every gunshot, scream and explosion was perfect, but I didn't like the music. The music was slow and bored (but it somehow helps to create a scary environment), so this is the only weakness that doom has. If you guys are as smart as I am this can be fixed in no time; just run the CD player along with Doom; insert an Iron Maiden or Metallica Album is there and no problem. The gameplay was simple; it just had walk (fw and back), turn and stifle but the control was so smooth that you can control everything. Almost forgot to mention that it has no free look so if you shot a enemy higher or lower than your shot is direct automatically to the target (note: don't try to return the fire if you're being shot from a higher nevel or you'll lose). In the matter of replay value, it has a lot. Every map (except for the ones that has a boss) has secret rooms, and it's almost impossible to find them in a run. If that is NOT enough there are 3 hidden level (one in every chapter) that you can access to them through a secret exit very well hidden that you needed play once and again to find them (they are Military Base, The tower of mystery, and Warrens). In conclusion Doom wasn't a hit by no reason. It was the very first game that showed all what the FPS games have to offer, however I hope that next generations can appreciate doom as it deserves. A wonderful masterpiece of the ID Software team, Thanks John Romero.
