It's okay.

So there isn't much to write about this game. It's pretty by the numbers action side-scrolling roguelike RPG that tries to emulate the better ones but just comes out as 'ok'. It's not bad by any means but it doesn't really do anything special to put itself beyond what it is trying to emulate.

The plot isn't there, it's just a simple 'kill the dragon, save the day' story and I'm glad it wasn't in my face the entire time. This is a game you'd play for the fun value.

Speaking of which, is it fun? At times it is. The first hour or so is fun and the combat is satisfying. It's nice to see RPG elements thrown in but I found the stat increases from level to level don't really matter that much. Equipment is how you get stronger and you do that by defeating enemies and getting gold. What could've easily broken this game for me is the difficulty. It can be hard. The levels are randomly generated, so sometimes the runs to the next checkpoint are very easy and other times it's a grueling test of skill to get through it.

Thankfully, every three levels there is a checkpoint. At the checkpoints, you can heal your self for a small fee and then buy new equipment. The best part about this? If you die, you have the option to return to the checkpoints and you don't lose anything. Unlike other Roguelike games I've played, this one is the faires. It doesn't make it too easy and it really saves time. The equipment does help make the game more manageable but it didn't feel like too much of a stat boost either. Some of the weapons are faster though and I felt those were better than the ones who only had a few more points of damage per hit.

Also, a neat feature is you get a bonus on gold. Depending how many levels you make it through without dying determines how much gold you can get as a bonus. It's a nice feature.

The game isn't that great so you don't really want to have to replay countless levels just to get back where you were.

There are five bosses and quite a bit of stages before each boss fight. The bosses are pretty similar and while I did have fun fighting them they could've easily thrown more bosses in. I would've rather had more bosses and less stages then the few that we got. Als,o it's about 6 hours long and it felt a bit too long. I would've been fine with a shorter game if it meant we had more boss fights that were entertaining. The bosses are more of a memorizing pattern game then anything else.

So is it worth getting? Maybe. If you see it for sale like I did for 5.00 USD or less, it might be a decent idea to give it a shot. You can do worse. I wouldn't pay more then that though and I'd only get it if you just want to blow through something in a few days and don't really mind the shortcomings. It's not a game that will ever blow anyone away but it is decent. It doesn't do anything bad, the problem is, it doesn't really do anything particularly good either.

You can replay the game again with your powered up character but I don't really see a reason to. Beating it once also gives you a platinum trophy so if you love getting those, this is one that you can get it easily.
