Back... Bigger... Better... Cheaper

User Rating: 9.4 | Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition PS2
Back in 2005, Capcom release Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. A prequel to the first DMC game a couple of years back. DMC3 improved DMC1 in every way possible and it came out a remarkable action game. Its hard as hell but the gameplay was awesome. Now, Capcom re-release DMC3 which is now named DMC3: Special Edition. With a $20 price tag, and a whole slew of extras... this makes DMC3 all the way complete.

Graphics:
Theres no changes here. But somehow... just somehow, I feel a little more slow-downs in DMC3: SE than in original DMC3. But fortunately, its just a little bit and it does not hinder gameplay at all. As again, the character models are done very well. The facial expressions especially are very real. Other than that, the backgrounds are nicely done although it isn't as gothic as it was back in DMC1. But anyway, the graphics department are still nice and the only thing has lost was the slight framerate problems when there are about a dozen enemies on screen.

Sound:
Capcom was good enough to give us a little bit of change into the music. Thats when you play as Vergil, the music are remixed. While not all are remixed, atleast 2 or 3 of them are. This is of course a plus though. The voice acting are of course the same as in the original DMC3 game. They are awesome nevertheless.

Gameplay:
Back is the infitnite style of gameplay DMC3 has. SE has everything the original posses, but this time you get to play as Vergil with his own particular movesets. Vergil has 3 devil arms only as oppose to Dante's 5. The good thing is, you can switch to any of Vergil's 3 different weapons on the fly. This makes Vergil playing style way different than Dante. His first weapon is the Yamato. A sweet-ass looking katana, the damage is high and the lightning quick slashing speed of the katana is dead serious.

Next is the beowulf. Practically, the highest damage among the 3 weapons Vergil has. Vergi'ls Beowulf movesets are different from Dante too. Infact, its even faster and more powerful. Then theres Vergil's very own Force Edge+Yamato combination weapons. The force edge moveset is similar to Dante's Rebellion moveset. Except faster and more powerful, combine this with the Yamato deadly slashing attacks... and you'll get the picture. Virgil's range attacks which basically his guns are replaced by summoned swords. His summoned swords are spamable on the fly, so by changing your range attack to lets say L1 or L2 button... you're practically own everything.

Overall, Vergil is no pallete swap of Dante. He is more powerful, faster and tougher than Dante. But most importantly, Vergil is fun to play as. Other than that, the ass kicking you once mastered back in DMC3 is in here. The combat is just so cuztomizable, that you're gonna need alot of practise to pull your own combos off without breaking a sweat.

The difficulty has been bumped down too. Instead of the US version's Normal mode being the Japanese hard mode, in SE the normal mode is the Japanese normal mode instead. This makes the game alot linear for gamers who moan about the insane difficulty of the orginal DMC3.

Story:
DMC3 takes place before DMC1. It shows the events of the 2 sons of Sparda, Dante and Vergil. While the story isn't any MGS quality stuff, its pretty good nevertheless.
