As good as the PC version and it does NOT disappoint...

User Rating: 8.5 | Deus Ex PS2
At first glance this PS2 conversion looks to be the same as the PC version, however there are noticeable differences. The maps have had to be cut up to fit into the limited memory space of the PS2, whereas on the PC version each level is a complete map.

This is not a problem however as the programmers have made transitions between the different areas of the main play area as seamless as possible. They have added doors and natural barriers which fit in perfectly well with the game-play environment.

The game-play itself is very similar to the PC counterpart and swapping for a controller is not really a problem, even for a dedicated PC "mouse and keyboard" player like myself. Having said that the mouse and keyboard do offer a more linear accuracy, especially when sniping...

There are certain changes to the map and those of you who have played the PC version will notice that certain areas have been totally re-written and that the map layout for some levels is completely different, which actually works very well and adds excitement and interest to the game.

For those of you who are not familiar with Deus Ex I will give a brief (very brief) synopsis.

You play the role of an augmented special agent who, in the game, is known as JC Denton. When I say augmented I mean that you are a normal human who is set in a near-future environment, and you are working for a corporation known as UNATCO (UNited Anti-Terrorist COalition).

You have been "enhanced" with certain biological aumentations in the form of "nanites" which surge throughout your body and enhance certain natural capabilities such as sight, running, jumping, breathing, strength etc...

These "augmentations" are upgradeable throughout the game and you can choose the ones that best suit your style of game-play. This style can be either stealthy of aggressive and the game will adapt (in a limited way) according to your choice. Believe me stealth is better in most cases...

To start with, you are working with your brother, Paul Denton, and together you are employed by UNATCO to strike down any threats to the USA. In the game these threats are present in the form of the NSF (formerly known as the National Secessionist Forces).

However things soon change, and as you progress through the game you realise that the NSF are not actually the real threat and that they, and you, are actually pawns in a much larger game which is being played by a secret society known as Majestic 12.

You very soon change sides and as you progress through the game you come to realise that neither UNATCO or the NSF are actually of any benefit to the USA or even to mankind, and eventually you get to work your way up the chain of conspiracies only to find that Majestic 12 is trying to take over everything. However there is a twist in the plot which ultimately leads to you discovering that there is an artificial intelligence called Helios trying to take over the entire human race and in the end you are given a choice as to whether you merge with it or destroy it.

As brief as this synopsis is, the game is much much deeper than the main story-line. It would take pages of text just to scratch the surface of what this game is about and where it is coming from. Deus Ex is filled to overflowing with conspiracy theory, and if you take the time to listen to EVERY conversation in the game, INCLUDING the ones outside of the main story thread, and if you take the time to read every book, newspaper and leaflet in the game, then you will discover that there is more to this game than the game itself.

Every little detail in this game can and should be examined because even the smallest detail can give you a clue as to the bigger picture. As I have already stated in my PC review of this game, Deus Ex is dripping with conspiracy theory, and the game-play is very dark and very intense.

You will NOT be disappointed with this game, despite it's age and appearance, concentrate on the game-play and enjoy the dark atmosphere... and be prepared to think long and deep about what you learn...

This game is a classic and yet another landmark in the genre. My respects go out to Warren Spector who headed this game, and to Eidos who helped to make it a reality, this game will go down in the annals of time as a true masterpiece...
