Honestly, the story itself is more intriguing than the mundane basic gameplay. But that's how it elevates the entire gaming experience, as we can't stop guessing and predicting who's shady, who's good, who's eventually evil, etc... The crime mystery aspect is well done and parallels several modern crime fictions out there.
The game also benefits from a second playthrough, as the game is jam-packed with foreshadowing. Just in the first minute of the game only, several key characters showed up. You can pick up the character's dialogue choices and understand why/how they are the bad/good guys in plain sight.
Great to know that a movie is coming out as well.
