Cheap HARD!!!!

User Rating: 7 | Demon's Souls PS3

Ok, not so much a review but a reason why to rent it first. Yes, the game is hard. But not "good" hard. The game is not challenging, it's cheap. Big difference. Good hard is smart ai good combat. Well, the game gets one right. It's combat is good. But this game is CHEAP hard.

This means it uses tricks to make the game hard. Like starting you with 50-60 percent health after you die and only a finite times you can regain body form for full health. This means sending you all the way back to the begining of the stage(albeit with some shortcuts) when you loose a boss fight. This means keeping track of used healing herbs so when you run out of half moon grass, your screwed because at this early in the game, you can't simply farm souls and buy more. No, this game could have been great if they would at least allow YOU, the gamer, to save instead of the stupid autosave. Or at least put make the boss fight a check point so you don't have to start over just to get back to the boss fight, which takes 12 times to beat. No, Ninja Gaiden was "good" hard with smart ai and a need to keep your wits about you. This game could have been great but SO many people will give up after this cheap, lazy programming hard game makes them use the ps3 controller as a surface to air missle..

EDIT 3/16/14

***** The above non-review was written after I could not beat the second boss of the game, the armor spider. I definitely did not have the right gear and didn't have the proper guide to get me thru the game. Yep, thats right, I beat Demon Souls with a guide(and played Dark Souls 1 and 2 with one). The reason, yes, there are those that love to find their own way thru a game and if playing a level 20 times only to figure out at level 30, you're not supposed to be there, they find it fun. I don't. This is not a slight on the series at all but I need a helping hand thru these games. This does NOT make the game easy. It means you learn from others.

Now let me get into my update review since I played this last year, about 7-9 months before Dark Souls 2 just came out.

Graphics. The game does a great job in making you feel not powerful at all. Anything can kill you. This is displayed in the graphics. Not amazing looking even back in 2010 when it was released, what it does do is give each world a unique look and a great ominous tone.

Gameplay: This is where the series will always shine and it all started here. Obviously there have been enhancements with each sequel but by and large, the framework for the combat has changed since Demon Souls, proving if it aint broke, don't fix it. The combat is great, each weapon unique, and the world has a weight to it, weapons hitting of the environment and such.... review to be continued...you'll also see why i changed my mind about this game
